Headlines called it a chemical plant, and I'd guess some chemicals were involved. BUT. The plant existed to recycle things.

Big boom. Vibrant pictures. Locals told to turn off their air-conditioners.

What kind of recycling? Assuming some kind of sustainable fuel / liquid recovery company. Which would definitely mean chemicals.

Sounds like the fire was caused by a forklift catching fire while it was in operation.

ETA - this is per an employee that talked (anonymously) with ABC13 in Houston.

Sound Resource Solutions is where this happened. They blend chemicals as well as recycle Industrial Chemical and Raw Materials.

How could a forklift cause all that?

Diesel forklift catches fire near chemicals and boom?

The owner said they have 30+ tanker trucks coming in every day and 30+ going out every day, so maybe the forklift caught fire near one of them?

Doesn't take much when there's Xylene around.

MORAL:
Recycling is dangerous.

The world should live like Louisiana: when you get done with something, drop it like it’s hot.

That includes furniture and vehicles and trailer houses, in addition to household appliances and garbage.

Home air conditioners recycling air inside the home. They do not draw outside air into the home.

They still create negative pressure which pulls air into the home a few cycles per hour.

This article says it is a petroleum processing plant.

quote:

At about 8:17 a.m., authorities said they received reports of a possible explosion at the petroleum processing plant Sound Resource Solutions, which reportedly makes solvents for glue and paint remover. A source told Eyewitness News that there is a 1000-gallon propane tank in the middle of the fire and a four-inch natural gas main under the ground.
