Does anyone know the criteria for hospitalizations? Does it follow the same criteria for COVID deaths? Meaning, are they counting someone with asymptotic COVID that goes to the hospital with a broken arm?
I believe hospitalizations mean being admitted (aka inpatient). Broken arm would be Outpatient.

If they are admitted to hospital (spend the night) then yes
Go to ER to get stitches & go home, no

Anyone that is admitted for any reason at all and happens to be positive for COVID is counted as a COVID hospitalization.

Wouldn't they just fall off the list the next day?

Riighhhtt .... because broken arms are frequently admitted? I don’t think “admitted” means receiving any treatment at all.

No I don’t think so.
I’m specifically referring to people that are admitted. Broken legs, torn ACL’s, concussions, those are sometimes admitted, and if any of those patients happen to have COVID they are counted in the COVID numbers.

I think they eventually would but I don’t believe those are real time numbers, do you?
Posted on 7/12/20 at 2:12 pm to tgrbaitn08
Not real time, but reflective. Have to think the number of broken arm type admits are pretty average each day and not steadily increasing each day.

Like in Texas, LA is counting the # of positives and not the # of individual’s testing positive .
Wait wait wait. So if I test positive, wait my two weeks and get better, and I go back to test again to return to work and test positive and additional 5 times before i clear, that counts as 6 total positive cases in the states statistics?

Good lord, how many times does this need to debunked?!

I don’t know, is it true or not?

Good point. I could see an increase in hospitalizations for COVID at a single point in time, when hospitals loosen admittance restrictions and test every admit for COVID. But, eventually these cases begin to turn themselves over, and discharges equal admits and there is a relative NET-0 increase. We are see hospitalizations continue to rise significantly, we are assuming this includes the discharges of non-COVID symptom admits, and this brings the level of concern back up.
In other words, I think the window has passed to count these new hospitalizations as COVID positives for non-covid-symptom admits.

Stating “they’re double/triple counting positives” doesn’t make the point you think it makes. If you want everything to open up and let things get back to normal, the best possible news would something along the lines of “4,000,000 test positive in LA, 22 new hospitalizations, 6 more on vents”.
There would be no one left to protect and we could just let go. If you’re stating that the case numbers are over inflated, you’re simultaneously stating that the CFR and hospitalization rate are higher than they appear in the stats, and perhaps high enough that it’s worth implementing restrictions designed to prevent the “not yet exposed” from getting it.

The LDH has been outspoken in its efforts to reduce this

Explaining this is an every day post.
Most days it seems that duplicates are removed first then new cases added. The total cases does not move up as much as the new cases since some duplicates are being removed.

Hospitalizations are not increasing due to a sudden spike in broken arms. They are increasing because the virus is spreading uncontrollably.
Amos 1) you asked why the facility where I consult is still testing. I talked to the ADON on Friday and I asked her -- she said that every Monday they've tested they've had one employee come back positive. The latest was an asymptomatic housekeeper. 3 weeks with ALL negative tests and they can stop.
2) You're in LC area -- my brother works in direct patient care at a hospital there and told me that they're admitting 6/7 per day and d/cing 5/6 per day and beds aren't an issue. (Also said that they've been using Remedisivir for about 3 weeks now -- I didn't inquire about effectiveness. He did tell me that he has yet to be tested.)
Is that what you're being told??
ETA and at this rate I won't be back in the facility in I can't even imagine how long!

I don’t have any info as it relates to direct patient care, sorry. The numbers I referenced in ICU were as informed as I am on hospitals and they are usually passed through several people before getting to me, so take for what it’s worth. Which hospital is your brother at if you don’t mind? My wife is LCMH.
As of Friday, my community was only awaiting a couple results on the latest round of testing. We’ve had 8 total, half staff / half residents, only 2 asymptomatic are residents still in-house. No plans for another round of testing as of now which could very well change. Staffing is becoming more and more difficult - I’m surprised your facility isn’t begging you to come back, really.

Memorial is where he is.
Glad y’all are doing well. Staffing is an issue I’m guesssing everywhere. I know the ADON said she’s just ready to be able to stop testing.

I hear you. Our equivalent to your DON is one of our positives. Been a rough couple weeks.
