Easy peasy:

1. Georgia
T-2. South Carolina
T-2. North Carolina
T-2. Louisiana

5. Illinois

eta: Honestly I just felt GA was slightly better than the other three.

I lived in Cali in the mid 80s, it’s not the same today.

In the 80s California was great (we were there from 1985-2021). Today, not so much...

We retired last year in California and moved back to Louisiana after being away for 43 years to be closer to family.

I'm with Pete Rose;

1. 80s Cali
2. 80s Florida
3. Texas
4. Louisiana (a lot of Baton Rouge has gone down so much since the 70s).

1. Tennessee
1b. South Carolina

5. Georgia

I only put TN first because of no income tax. The weather and scenery are great. SC is clearly 1b because you're two hours from mountains, cities, or beaches, and the weather is incredible.

Georgia is really way too big to be graded in one sum. North Georgia is awesome, and full of great people. Metro Atlanta sucks arse, and despite being a world-class city in many ways, it's lost a lot of its charm and culture through *so much* migration from other parts of the country. Augusta is not worth living in again, as it feels like a race war is always about to pop off. South Georgia is great, once you get past the gnats, and that everything is trying to eat you.
