One day we'll look back on these Swiss army knife tailgates and chuckle

Kinda like how Chevy made an entire commercial mocking “fords manstep”

And then they created their own when they relaized it made sense

Honda’s problem is that you can’t get to the spare if the bed is loaded.

What if you have a flat and the bed is full of mulch?

Explain to me how this is an improvement over a traditional drop down tail gate. The whole point of a tail gate is that it drops down to extend the truck bed. Don't give me some line about tossing 80lb bags of fertilizer. If I'm tossing 80 lbs bags of fertilizer on a regular basis I'm not using this truck to begin with and im buying bulk fertilizer. Screw bags. This is a gimmick that they hoped would look good in an ad. Even on SUVs a split tailgate is null. Why open two doors when I can just open the whole damn thing? It's useless. If I need to put something small in my truck bed I set it over in there. If I need more room I let the tailgate down. Where does a split door become necessary?

Is the spare not under the truck?

Nope. No way it supports the same load when it's divided in the middle. Sure, it lays down but its not the same.

It’s is sandwiched under the bed floor. Look closely at the picture above

1. This tailgate still drops down

2. You now don’t have to lean over a dropped tailgate to load and unload material

This is very simple

Because it can act as either a drop down tailgate or a barn door tailgate. That's called versatility. Look it up.

Your ignorant brand loyalty is blinding you to some obvious advantages/uses for this design.

Don’t get me wrong, I think the Honda bed is neat. I guess they couldn’t put the spare underneath due to the storage compartment.

Nobody who drives a Honda Ridgeline is hauling mulch.

So you see the usefulness? Being able to load with a fork lift, as another example.

I have loaded pallets and bulk bags of seed (2500-3000 lbs) in the back of trucks with fork lifts since I was 13 years old and have never had a tailgate fail when sitting part of the pallet on it before I slid it all the way into the bed. I’m sure it has happened but never to me.
Wonder how well it is supported in the center if you had a Four Wheeler sitting on it in the down position? May be fine but looks like a weak point.

Just read where it will support 2000 lbs so yea that is plenty.
