What is racial about that? I'd say the quality of life in the average U.S. prison is higher than the quality of life in the average African village. The guarantee of three meals a day and a roof over your head is something a lot of people in the world don't have.

There are far more black males in the United States than there were in 1850. From a percentage point of view, it's a nonsensical argument. From a pure numbers stand point it is likely wrong as well. Somewhere around 90% of the 3.6 million African Americans were slaves in 1850. There were 841,000 black males incarcerated in 2009 of 39 million African Americans. Assuming the current black population is roughly 40% males (I assume its closer to 50%, but lets err on the side of caution) and the slave population was the same, the % of black males enslaved was (.9 * .4 * 3.6 million)1.296 million or 90% vs 841,000 or (841,000/(.4 * 39 Million))5.39% of black males incarcerated.

I think the wording of his original statement was poorly selected. The implementation of reconstruction under Johnson was particularly bad for the average southerner while protecting the very people who effectively functioned as aristocracy in the pre civil war south. The result was a populous rife to be manipulated into what became the Jim Crow South.

There is no justification for slavery but the handling of reconstruction almost certainly helped to perpetuate much of the current racial tensions and racism we see today, particularly that portion of the animus related to the civil war and slavery.

Hopefully we can move beyond these things and just start treating people with respect and letting history be in the past.

White privilege is the source of all racism and it's worse today than ever before. It's tougher to be black in America in 2016 than it was to work on a plantation. And it's all your fault

Now this is how you troll.

My apologies, I did not mean that the way it may have read.

Because the subject has so much emotion associated with it, it's difficult to write this kind of stuff and not use language that some may misinterpret. I had the benefit of seeing reactions to you statement, which I read the way you meant but could see after the comments how someone might not. Had I written a statement first, I suspect it would have been much like what you wrote.

No examination of such a question is complete unless two thing are considered:

1) how exactly do you want to define racism? expressions of hate? what would you attitude be toward uneducated people easily identified by the color of there skin? would that attitude be racism?

2) how much did the decedents of slaves in the US benefit because their ancestors were settled in America rather than remaining is Africa?

Neither of these questions are inappropriate--they simply should be considered.

It could be argued that this period was more responsible for Jim Crow than the previous 250 years.

I assume this is an "original" hypothesis of yours--since no respected authority on the matter has ever, to my knowledge at least, submitted such a dubious proposition for scholarly analysis and debate.

You ever have complete control of a group, lose it for a period of time, then get it back. I guess that it's preposterous to think that you'd want to show them who's boss.
