Question for those who wait tables

Which do you prefer:
You wait your tables and keep your own tips
You and the person in the section next to you attack the tables in both of your sections and work as a team throughout the shift. At the end you add up both of your total tips and split 50/50
You wait your tables and at the end throw the tips into a group pot and the tips are split equally to all servers.
I prefer the second one if it’s someone I trust. It’s an insurance that one of you doesn’t get screwed and having a teammate makes it go smoother

Yeah I get that. Second method to me I like to think of as capitalist with an insurance policy. Or hedging I guess. If it’s somebody you trust to work hard then having a teammate and knowing that one isn’t going to get screwed and walk home with nothing while the other hits the jackpot is my preference.

That is part of waiting tables. If you are a good server though, one bad table won't ruin your night because you have other good tables.
To be honest, it all depends on the type of restaurant you work. I worked at an upscale steakhouse (by BR standards) so we were constantly trying to upsell our tables. In that case, I 100% want to be on my own. If you are working at a turn and burn place, maybe another server wouldn't be too bad to have in order to help get people in and out ASAP.

But if you only have two tables yeah one bad one will ruin your night.
And I’m 100% convinced that it doesn’t matter the quality of service, each table knows what percent they’ll leave before they walk in the door. So you’re right upselling is key. I think it just comes down to whether you trust the other server. I like being section partners with someone I know does as good of a job as I do. Like I said it’s kinda like an insurance policy, it smooths over the fluctuations a litte.
Side rant but related the servers that think hey are Superman (and always tell the manager how great they are too) and think their superior service somehow gets them more money are aggravating as frick. Every restaurant has them. And because they refuse help and try to take on everything to prove to everyone how badass they are they frick stuff up.

Unless it's a superrrr slow night, you should easily get more than 2 tables. Even on those kind of nights, I would close in order to get all the later tables and still did well. Again, it depends on the restaurant. If you are working at BWW and a table of 4 is $40 or Ruth's where a 4 top is $400, makes a big difference.
Either way, I don't want to split a section. Even if it's one bad night, it evens out the nights that you make $200+.

Never waited tables but curious. What does "upselling" mean?

Selling appetizers, a bottle of wine instead of a glass, adding something on top of a steak, etc.

Standard OT tip...3.50%

Thought that was it. Thank you for clarifying.

Basically it’s just suggestively selling. Most people go into restaurants with an ideal budget. Upwelling is getting an app on a table that planned on just having bread, again selling a bottle instead of 2 glasses of wine, etc. little things that add up.

I didn't wait tables, but I was a bartender at a country club. I would prefer to split tips because I was a dude and the hot college girls raked in the tips. That's why the dudes normally made the drinks at the bar while the girls were the servers

Being a dickhead and trying to sell you shite you dont want or need.
Would you like an app with that? What about this? What about that?
It's an annoying practice that should be reserved for Applebees type places
