Thanks man. Does it work well, and does it look nice? Engraving looks good and everything?

Yes, yes, and yes.

It's my go-to ligher, especially on the road. I would find out if he is okay with a punch though. Some guys only like a cut cigar. But they do have lighter/cutter combos too.

I think he only likes cut. Got any recommendations for that?

Get a Xikar soft flame lighter. These are the tits.

Agree. You can get a Xikar with three torches for under $100.

Note that it doesn't come filled with butane. Plan accordingly.

this may be a pretty newb question, but if he cuts his cigar instead of punching it, does it really matter which lighter he gets? i feel like the same lighter would be used but now he might have a lighter with a puncher attached.

It is unlikely he will use the cutter on a lighter. Even if he uses a xikar cutter and the lighter has one on it, his unitasker is still likely superior. I personally use my cutter regardless of the capabilities of my lighter. Now at least he has the option to punch should he ever have the need to do so. I think the other options are just lagniappe. The idea of the butane lighter is what is going to move the needle on this gift.

Shark,

I HIGHLY recommend anything in the Xikar line. They make very good products and they are guaranteed for life.

For around $100, you could do a mid-range lighter and one of the multi-tool scissor cutters. The fold out tools on the cutter help to adjust the lighter and bleed the tank when you are refilling it. Plus the scissor cutter is better than any other cutter I've ever had.

You also want to think about the number of burners on the lighter. A single will do the trick, but a triple burner lights the cigar with a quickness.

As for buying a box of cigars, I would get an idea of what he likes so far and talk to a cigar store you trust before going rogue. You would hate to buy a box that he ends up not liking only to see it sitting in the bottom of his humidor every time you visit.

Great gift, my friend!

Thanks for the input. I am going to head to Up in Smoke here in Dallas and talk to the owner there. I remember them having good lighters. Probably going to do a triple torch. Not sure if they will do engraving there (I doubt it) but I am pretty sure I can take it to the place in the mall that engraves shite.

Don't. Get a soft flame or a double soft flame. The torches often get too hot and leave the tobacco with a bitter flavor. They aren't preferable except in windy situations, IMO.

Ended up going with this one in Silver. I tried it out at the Cigar shop its legit. In the end I don't think he will be concerned about burning the tobacco too much or anything he will just want something that gets the cigar lit more quickly. He's not a hardcore aficionado or anything just enjoys having one on the weekends. Plus at our wedding reception we are having a cigar bar and I thought he could put this to good use.
