Question for OT Medical Professionals w/ Trans Patients
Posted on 2/8/17 at 10:05 am

I don't know shite about the medical field, but I'm assuming in some situations injuries/illnesses are treated differently based on gender. Do transgendered patients have to come to grips with their XY or XX identity to get proper treatment? I'm sure hospitals have policies in place, but I'm curious.
i.e. a "man" having cervical cancer or a "female" having prostate cancer.

Transgender not tranny

I'm not a physician but I do have ts clients that I must fill out paperwork and forms for. I respectfully address them as what they identify as, but spare them no dose of reality or questioning about medications and or health issues or risk factors.

I would imagine most MDs treat pts based on their physical anatomy and communicate the tx plan as they would with any other pt. The show is fine for the general public, but an MD sees the man behind the curtain so to speak.
For a "woman" with prostate ca: If said tranny is too deluded to acknowledge their own anatomy, then make a psych referral along with an oncologist and/or proctologist.

Was talking to be my preceptor about this yesterday. Address them by their wanted pronoun(feel dumb for even typing this), but treat and explain things according to their physical anatomy

Actually had a patient with this issue last year.
He's been on estrogen for 20+ years and wanted Medicare to pay for him to have a mammogram- they initially balked since he is listed as male on all of his demographic data but then he appealed and pulled the discrimination card and they covered it

Probably the right call. Breast cancer is possible even for cis males, and that particular patient had additional risk factors. Breast cancer is more likely for that patient than prostate cancer.
I'm not a doctor but I have seen medical records for trans patients. They're listed as their actual sex, with a note on the account indicating how to address them.

Scruffy is correct.
You are what you are when you come out of your momma.
His momma named him Clay, imma call him Clay.

Seems like this should have been done a long long time before.

If you don't find the transgendered or transsexuals attractive then you are a bigot.

Doctors have no right to designate gender. NO RIGHT! Now touch my imaginary labia.
