I recently bought a tuxedo for the first time (I’m 28) and was curious if tuxedo shirts had to have button studs in them when you wear the tux?

I have a few very nice, white, French cuff dress shirts, but they don’t have the double slots for button studs. I tried googling with mixed reviews.

It’s a nice tux, nice shirt with nice cufflinks, nice suspenders, nice bowtie, etc…can I make do withOUT the button studs?

If you're a gentleman, no.

If you're a trashy baw, go for it.

You can get basic ones very cheap, FWIW.

you can make due with it but it also depends on the event

All my tux shirts are J Hilburn and have the ability to do either. Highly recommend them

Get a Tuxedo shirt with a covered button placard. Best of both worlds. No exposed buttons and a tuxedo shirt willl have a stiffer bib which keeps it flat on your chest.

Forget everything you've ever known about tuxedos from rental places. Don't ruin a nice tuxedo with a regular white button down.

I know the studs are cheap and actually have nice pearl ones, but the nice shirts (which id buy) are gonna run me $200 with tailoring.

I guess I've just gotta do it.

My tailored David Donahue French cuff shirts aren't really a regular button down. They have that nice thick texture.

But I think I'll get a tux shirt. Y'all have convinced me.

covered button placard.

These are fricking sweet.

Hopefully I can find a decently priced one.

While we're on the topic, make sure the tux is well tailored and tuck the front pocket flaps inside of the front pockets if they exist. I'd recommend a cummerbund that matches the texture of the bow tie, or if you can find a legitimate tuxedo vest, but those are hard to find. The vest should NOT be visible in the jacket opening above the jacket button. Anything else looks like a rental/prom outfit.

This is the shirt I've got. It comes with a strip of buttons you can use, or remove them and wear studs. I usually wear it with the buttons. But this isn't a French cuff dress shirt, it's a patterned tux shirt.

Obviously. I have a great tailor that handles my suits that will do it.

Chose a style without flaps.

I am wearing suspenders, and not a cummberbund or vest.

Its a good looking tux. I know how to dress up well, I just wasn't sure about the studs thing. Thanks for the help.

good man

go get the nicest, thickest, well made shirt you can find (and get it starched). everything about the tux is about the shirt looking crisp and clean. ive still got and still wear the rubensteins tux i bought back in the early 90's, but with a nice shirt it looks great

No flaps is Bueno.

I wanted to go suspenders and no cummerbund but was specifically told this is a huge fashion faux pas. I don't usually abide by the rules that much but a tux event sort of calls for that level of detail in my mind. Love to hear an opposing opinion.

I am doing the studs only because it allows me to go straight traditional (black or pearl) or add a little flash for Mardi Gras or events that call for it.

My dad said "tell em to dump the starch on it" when I talked to him about what tux shirt to get

I'm getting a nice material shirt, probably a david donahue, that is very thick and I'm going to get the cleaners to starch it up nice.

Appreciate the advice gentlemen.

Nicest tux shirt I have ever seen was at Carriages in Baton Rouge. Can't remember the price but they aren't cheap.
