Question About Firepit Drainage
Posted on 12/23/16 at 9:46 pm

My firepit won't drain.
I've dug around in the approximately 3/4 inch drainage hole with a coat hanger and it's just plugged up. Other than blowing it up and building another one, anyone got any suggestions???
I was wondering if there isn't sort of chemical I can put in the water that might dissolve the clog - like firepit draino or something.

Enzymes like liquid alive might work.

Forced air. Many ways so won't list them all.

What does this fire pit look like

The wall of the pit is about 16 inches thick - is there some sort of attachment I can buy that will fit my regular person's drill?? I'm far from a stone mason here.

Good luck with that. Seems you shoukd be able to bust open a drain in a firepit with a coat hanger or a drill bit. Shouldn't be hard.

Need a bigger drain pipe, or clean out the ashes after every burn... ashes and water will fill the pipe and when it drys it's almost like concrete...

It's a semi circle - the back side is built into my yard. I have a dug out type patio set up - you step up from the patio into the yard. Probably not describing that very well.
Made of some sort of stone, fire brick on the inside.

We're pretty good about cleaning out the ashes - shop vac. We have a heavily wooded yard and lots of crap winds up in there. I think it's a piece of something wedged in there. Going to get one of those long drill bits another poster suggested.
I came really close to building a full-on fireplace; now regretting that decision.
But I do agree the drain should have been larger.

Is the drain a steel pipe or pvc?
They make pipe augers that you could attach to a drill but not sure if it work mess a pv pipe up or not, and if something large is wedged in there then it probably would not work.

Have no clue what the drain is made of. Of course the guy that built it isn't returning my calls.
I'm going to get a long bit and drill a while and see what happens.
Thanks for all the advice! And, Merry Christmas!!
