Question about airlines ... bumping passengers and prescreening

I fly but not nearly as often as many of you so answer these for me.
Daughter and I had a trip recently ... I know it's typical for them to over book flights. They announced that they needed someone to volunteer to change flights OR if not the last person who booked the flight would get bumped.
QUESTION IS who the heck is important/special enough to bump the last guy who booked the flight? Skymiles Elite member or something? What if they booked last minute due to say having to travel to the funeral of a family member or to maybe meet a family member wiht some type of medical emergency and are the one to be bumped?? (don't know if anyone volunteered or not so IDK what happened)
Next question: printed boarding passes night before our return trip. Dtrs (14) said whatever about prescreening ... somehow the guy at the gate let us BOTH through and we went to the "short line" before I realized that this had happened (yes I should have paid closer attention). QUESTION is HOW do they randomly selected people to NOT have to go through screening? I wasn't sending her in a line by herself ... it'd have taken her 5 minutes maybe 10 but the line I'd have to have gone in would have taken a lot longer. (TSA agent ended up being really nice -- unlike the guy who signed off on our passes -- and put us in the correct line toward the front ... I did apologize to the guys in back of us. TSA dude said the guy at the gate should have caught that and not let us through).

Likely the last person who booked their ticket in the lowest fare class.

TSA pre check is a service that can be paid for or applied for. Your daughter received it because she's under 16 IIRC from the rules.

I guess I didn't get why they'd separate parent/child. It was Nashville and not huge but still ...

fact is, overselling and bumping people from flights that they are counting on is just a flat out shitty thing to do...I am not sure why we as customers stand for it at all...
I have only seen a few folks actually get bumped in a good number of years, as airlines typically just keep upping the amount of the travel voucher until someone like me takes them up on it...

It was hilarious yesterday.
Flight next to us was overbooked
Guy accepted $350 and first class ticket on later flight
5 minutes later they announce plane broke flight canceled and later flight full so you're stuck in Houston.
Dude that accepted later flight had to be laughing

I get pissed every time I go through midway and they have one TSA agent tapping an ipad. Left is long line, right is short line and keep your shoes on and everything.

Because the airlines rarely have to actually involuntarily deny boarding. And when you are DOT regulations state that you're due a pretty steep cash payout on the spot.

Correct. Because revenue management knows exactly what they get to make the flight still turn a profit based on the highly purchased oversold seats.

They likely held the seat for him when he agreed to volunteer. So he could go to the gate for the new flight and plead his case. But he wouldn't pocket the $350 if they did it correctly.

I don't know how people deal with airlines regularly. My company has a couple planes we take when we need to travel and its not even comparable.

I'm not traveling as much but you get used to it and if you know how to handle a delay or prepare for one you'll usually come out ahead.

Why can't they just book a full flight and then not fill a seat if someone doesn't show? They've still got their money. I know .. they can make MORE money but really???
I think on 3 of our 4 flights last week I could have bid online to give up my seat. No time for that ... HAD to get there asap and then WANTED to get home ASAP.

People with a seat rarely get bumped because someone will always volunteer after holding out for a hefty voucher or check.

If someone missed the flight because a connection didn't make it in time, then most likely they'd be put onto a later flight without charge. Also, with cheap airlines/discount fares you may not get a refund if you cancel or don't show, but some airlines and some types of tickets can be transferable to another flight. In either of those scenarios the airline wouldn't get the money for a full flight if one of those passengers wasn't there.
They probably overbook because they're wagering that a certain percentage of passengers won't show, will miss the flight, or will re-book another flight.
