Did you check the specs on the rotary girder before starting it up again?

It was definitely in drive. The engine would have roared if it were in neutral. It was like the car was off and I was pushing the gas pedal.

Might not of fully shifted

Someone 3-d printed your gas pedal and replaced it. Fake pedal.

Definitely the flux capacitor.
Tell your mechanic to find a used one to save money.

Probably just needed a reboot

You sure the engine didn't die backing out? Won't rev. Check. Won't move in drive. Check. Service Engine light on. Check. Restart and works fine. Check.

You didn't have it cranked.
I do it a lot because I'm very stupid.

Did you think to try the "Ask a mechanic anything thread?"

I believe the Altima has an electronic throttle, meaning it's not controlled by a cable. It could be a sign that the throttle body actuator is going bad or something like the park-neutral switch or some transmission sensor not telling the computer what gear you are in. Take it and get the codes read. Should give you a place to start.

It's the fetzer valve going bad.
Definitely the muffler bearing if you ask me.

Transmission.
Yeah you need to check that tranny. Get you hand down there really good and grab the rod. Then jiggle it till you get it back in place. Warning if you jiggle too much it could cause seepage

If it's a Nissan, check the computer. And don't let a dealer shop do it. Have it checked by someone else. I had this same problem 5 years ago and the idiots at Royal Nissan said the transmission needed to be replaced. Fortunate a friend recommended someone else and the problem was the computer was bad.
$1500 later it ran like new. It happened at 91,000 miles. I just passed 162,000 miles and it's still running like a champ.

Might want to check the blinker fluid reservoir.

Not sure what year your Nissan is, but some models from 2005 to about 2010 have issues with radiator fluid leaking into the transmission and frying it. Nissan has admitted that this issue is a design flaw by them, but they won't recall the cars, and regulating agencies won't make them recall them because the issue hasn't lead to enough deaths yet. Pretty crappy customer appreciation by Nissan if you ask me. There is plenty of info online about this if you want to see if this issue applies to your Altima.
