My son was admitted to the hospital with RSV at 6 weeks old. While there he started projectile vomiting and he was diagnosed with pyloric stenosis. Going under anasthesia for the surgery while having RSV was some scary shite.

My 1 Y/O boy was diagnosed with RSV on Monday. He's a bad son of a bitch, so it doesn't affect him much.

They wouldn't let him eat and his veins weren't developed enough to feed him intravenously, so they couldn't wait for the RSV to clear up. That's what we were told, anyway.

Cmon Scruffy, you should know better. The virus is the same every year, it doesn't change like the flu and can't be any 'worse'. And you shouldn't be testing for RSV anymore, at least that's what the AAP says and best practice measures these days.

It's been a bad season this year. More widespread than it was last year and our PICU has more kids intubated and on ECMO this year.

What do you mean don't test for RSV anymore????
I work on a Peds acute floor and we do a respiratory viral panel on any kid with respiratory symptoms to check for RSV, HRV(human rhinovirus), coronavirus, flu, etc so we can put them in the appropriate isolation and better treat them
And we are seeing a lot of RSV....but not more than we usually see the time of year here.
But yeah....RSV can be really rough on babies (babies can still die from it). I actually feel like crap now....likely RSV.....occupational hazard

The AAP doesn't recommend testing for RSV since bronchiolitis is a clinical diagnosis. No X-ray either.
It doesn't change management.
We get the viral panels on the more severe kids and treat others as assumed and put them on contact/droplet precautions.

Seems like we just swab most all the respiratory kids here. We swab nose and back of throat and send in same medium. Tests for like 10-12 different resp viruses.
However though.....the patient population we treat is your more poorer patients as well as several undocumented patients and refugees from other countries such as Somalia, Burma, etc. So we see some really sick kids. This place is a playground for residents because of all the crazy stuff that comes in.
P.s.----I'm leaving Peds. Gonna be a infection control nurse. Should be quite a change. Seems like it could be really interesting as well.

And lsunurse, yeah the acute care units still test for everything because if you end up in the unit or a step down floor we kinda feel a little more pressed to determine what got you there and to make sure the other kids on the floor don't get it too (universal vs droplet precautions, etc...). For run of the mill bronchiolitis though we're not supposed to test, X-ray, nor give albuterol as standards anymore.

OT docs, just came down with a cold today on Christmas. Everything is closed. Runny nose, drainage down back of throat, stomach upset, aches.

My 11 month old girl has it. She's been a trooper tho. My neighbors kid had it 3 weeks ago and was hospitalized for 3 days.
