Woke up this morning to a hot house. Went and checked a saw capacitor had been fried. About 30 minutes later AC was back up and running.

If you do not do it, keep a spare AC capacitor and a spare switch on hand. Two simple repairs that account for a lot of AC problems.

to others on this board who have recommended this.

Is that similar to a "Clutz Capacitor"?

I've tried to Post this PSA every time an AC thread pops up.
You can get a capacitor and a relay for $20 on Amazon

Just look at the one currently on your unit and order one with the same numbers. Should be something like 45/5/440, this is what mine takes. As long as those numbers are correct, the capacitor will work.

Here's another idea

Go to Walmart and buy a window unit, use it until AC is fixed, return window unit for full refund.

This is what I did :)

I had to same issue, but my set up doesn't have a capacitor. I had to call a tech who had to replace the entire motor.

typical.

ETA: I meant that I usually pay the same amount to get mine fixed. I'm hoping to take this PSA and make it work for me.

Yea I spent $100 to have this repaired a couple months ago. Is this an easy/safe thing to do yourself? I'm pretty handy when it comes to fixing things, especially if I can find a YouTube video

Yeah does the power have to be shut off prior to removing and replacing?

The downside to this is that a blown capacitor is often a symptom of something larger. Perhaps your motor is going bad.

Just pull the outside breaker that is next to the unit. I certainly wouldn't attempt it with power on.

Yes, but since the capacitor is - well - a capacitor, even this doesn't guarantee you won't be shocked.
