as many times I've boiled crawfish, I've never had that happen to me...

those shitty hoses can dry out

Crappy burner without a heat shield for the hose. Also, if you use a burner that is made for a smaller pot, it will have a shorter heat shield. Add a larger pot and you get a hot hose.
This. But I would think the OP would see signs of it "melting" before a hole formed?
OP, Id definitely hold your hand there along the hose to see what it feels like when you are cooking. If its too hot to hold your hand there long term, you have a shield issue IMO.

I had a burner doing the same thing and I got this. Haven't had a problem since.

LOLz. I went to a striaght needle valve this year. Boil dat water in under 10 minutes, baw.

What's the hose rated for though? I'd venture to bet a minimum of 60 psig.

quote:Yeh I am thinking that is the fix. It just has to be the hose getting hot and eventually melting. No other possibility really. I was just perplexed because the shitty hose that came with the burner alomst 10 years ago is still going strong, but am now thinking that is due to the lower PSI regulator keeping a lower flame which doesnt get the area near the hose as hot

Pic of the burner?
I have had the same exact hose and 60 psi regulator in the picture for 5 years now and never had an issue.
I have a double jet burner with a heat shield.

Me either.

Well there’s your problem. I’ve had the same burner regulator and hose for almost 10 years and have never had that problem. No problems on my newer setups either.
If you’d take better care of the hoses you probably wouldn’t have that problem.

sit kinked or pinched when stored?
Yes. But I checked hose yesterday before boild and no leaks were detected. 20 minutes into boiling, a small flame was noticed.

quote:Explain to me how that is is the issue, when I have done nothing different over the years with my hoses, and I have a hose that is 10+ years old that still works fine.......

If it was the quality of the hose storage, it would fail the leak test before I started the boil.

That’s the only thing we do different. I spool mine around the burner, I don’t fold it or kink it. And my burners don’t have heat shields and I’ve never had this problem. Folding and linking the hoses will eventually cause leaks. Especially if you don’t have a heat shield to protect the hose either, further deteriorating it. May be a combination of both.
I have three burner set ups and run the bejesus out of them during Easter weekend and have never had this problem. Ever. And like I said one setup is over 10 years old.

I have a bayou classic burner
If I didnt attach heat shield, I would no doubt burn through a hose in 5 minutes with the flame size with the 60psi regulator turned all the way up

Has the shroud immediately around the flame, but no separate shield where the hose connects.
ETA Similar to this. No shield where the connection is made.

Only heat shield, is the flimsy "shroud" you mentioned

The center piece that surrounds the flame is to what I was referring.
These burners have shields on the hose connnections, but looks like the come with braided lines now too.

Similar to that...

We have the same setup, same regulator and same hose. Yet I don’t fold mine up.
Do you see why I suggested that as a potential problem? Get yourself a braided hose like the other baws suggested and roll that sum bitch up.

Braided hose and better heat shield...
