BTW: Thanks for your points, I didn't realize the interplay between the carriers and the facilities was that deep.

Absolutely, in a residual agreement the carriers have something called a majority in interest (MII) clause. It gives them the right to veto any capital project that would affect their rate base. That is why most if not all of the features in the new terminal are blessed, if not supported by the airlines.

I'm not sure how closely they looked at the whole land side access thing though.

This is true, it's why many box stores are single line.

What box store is single line, besides self checkout? Whole foods express lanes are, best buy is, unless they've changed. I don't know of any others.

Love field has one line that splits into like 20 screening points. One of several reasons I prefer DFW.

This! Place is great

But if the existing terminal has 37 gates on the concourses in service and only 22 gates are rented, wtf are we doing building a new terminal

And if they were looking to build a terminal, why spend all that money to renovate the current one? It seems like a giant waste of money. Not going to say it's the nicest airport, but it's pretty good.

In my opinion, it gets the job done just fine. However, SM6 and cahoots have some informative posts on the last couple of pages. According to them, much of this is driven by the airlines and they've got money in the game. If figured it was just another way for Mitch and his cronies to enrich themselves at taxpayer expense (which it probably is, too. Just to a lesser degree than I initially anticipated.)

Marshall’s is one.

Problem is that airports are not retail. You don’t stay at the document check guy until an open X-ray machine opens. You go get into an individual line like at the grocery store.

The theory is sound but it isn’t apples to apples for an airport security line.

You mustn’t fly much. It is a pit. I remember when it was new - a great little airport then. Years have passed and airports in other locales are light years ahead of Armstrong/Moisant in amenities, cleanliness, ease of getting from point A to point B. Case in point - Tampa International. Another - Louisville. Another - Sarasota. Another - San Diego. Another - Love Field. Another - Hartsfield-Atlanta. St. Petersburg.

One day I would like to be able to fly into my home city without thinking what a dirty, run down, outdated, sloppy airport. I would like to be proud of our facilities and feel good about being there.

How old are you?

I have flown commercially quite a bit in the US, although not nearly as much the past 10 or 12 years. I can't say I'm up to speed on almost every major and many of the smaller airports anymore. The worst place I ever remember landing was Albuquerque. The place looked like a third world country, complete with military aircraft all over (they shared some space with the NM Air Guard and Kirkland(?) AFB at the time.) Fargo had 4 gates and only 2 operating. LGA is marginally better than a Pakistani bus terminal.

I don't pay a lot of attention to concessions. If I can get between terminals w/o a hassle, I'm happy. Give me a place to buy a beer if I have a layover and a clean toilet and I'm happy. I've never thought of MSY as a "dump". It's got a screwed up footprint, but nobody is ever landing on D and flying out of B 30 minutes later.

I have no doubt the new terminal will be beautiful and the baggage system will be light years ahead of what we've got.
