Hey guys,
I'm getting into yard mode around the house and wanted to get some input from others. In the past few years, I have paid for a professional service (Modern Turn, TruGreen, etc) to come out and spray my yard for weed control, etc.

I got tired of them coming unannounced and leaving a bill on my steps, so I cut them off. I wasn't keen on paying it when the weeds weren't bad and they came regardless if I called or not. I didn't need the 6 visits per year or whatever they wanted, maybe half that.

Went to Lowe's this weekend to get some weed and feed to give it a go myself, and it looks like I'm looking at about $70-80 worth of product to cover my 1/3 acre. Is that all I need, will weed and feed do it all?

Am I better off to pay one of the services?

TBC I am not looking to pay someone to cut my grass.

Just pay someone. They aren't just taking care of weeds that pop up, they are preventing weeds.

Most weed and feed is garbage and you don't want to weed and feed at the same time. Kill weeds then fertilize.

Here is what I learned- If you wait until weeds look like an issue, then it is too late and your fight is way worse. They come 5-6 times a year to proactively treat for weeds and I tried to do that without them. The cost was very similar since the products needed to be put down periodically and I never seemed to get the timing right, which led to more products needed.

Now, they just come and do their thing and my lawn has never looked better.

Thanks for the input, that's what I'm looking for. I am more of a DIY guy than paying someone, but the cost of the chemicals I need are going to be close to what it would cost for the service...and who's to know if I would apply correctly.

It cost me an average of $20 dollars each time to do it myself. That is 2 pre emergent applications per year and 4 fertilizer applications per year. I have a 1/3 acre lot as well

Its worth it if you don't have time.

I love working on my lawn though.

You mind listing what you use? Need to show some much needed love to a house we're buying and dont have the extra to pay for a chemical company to come do what I can do.

i recently made the switch to having some one take care of weeds, fertilizer, etc for me. TruGreen.

They've only done 4 treatments for me. So i'm not seeing a ton of benefit yet and I'm stilling spraying here and there for spot weeds.

Same. If I can do it myself, I'm all in. I just don't think I can do it for $20 per application.

Green is green in my book.

The weeds look bad in my yard right now, but the grass should start coming back soon and the weeds will be choked out.

I just hate laying down chemicals.

I'm not as familiar with Zoysia as others, but I will just assume the maintenance of it will be similar to bermuda. I use this as my pre emergent. This whole jug will last you almost a lifetime. I use about .5oz a gallon. Need to spray it once now and once in the late fall before grass goes dormant. I bought a $40 backpack sprayer to apply it with

I get my fertilizer from what is formally known as John Deer Landscapes. They changed their name recently to SiteOne I believe. They provide the fertilizer that pros use. You will need to look up what zoysia typically requires for fertilizer.

ETA to kill the weeds you have now, just mix this in with the pre emergent when you spray. THIS

A clover lawn is underrated.

Me too CC, but when it comes to timing and staying on top of weeds, fertilizer and pests I just give TruGreen the $325 annually to love my zoysia for me.

Yeah, I hear ya.

As a fellow zoysia owner, question for you. I laid some new sod last year and a few patches have died out, not sure why...not lack of water. With fertilizer and water, will it spread in back over those bare spots?
