Upon earning P.E. licensure, what should an employee in New Orleans or Baton Rouge expect regarding pay raise or bonus?
Let's be honest here and help each other out. The typical OT embellishment will be of no help here.
ETA: Private Sector

Idk, check out what your coworkers make and figure it out from that

I assume you work for a private firm? If you work in the public sector expect nothing.
You could start picking up work on the side, assuming you didn't sign a noncompete.

It will vary by company but every company I know has a published bonus amount you will earn upon getting your PE. So check your company handbook.

I know what my company offers and i'm not terribly happy about it. I'm wondering what other companies in the area are offering.

Well, from what I have heard, Wal-Mart does not give bonuses for professional licensure.

Depends on industry, timing, and responsibility. Need more info.

First thing I would say, get out of LA and go to TX. Civil is booming here with all the new construction. TxDOT has been putting out some big contracts for roads and regular civil itself cannot keep up with all the new businesses, neighborhoods, etc.

I dont think there is a good answer here. I am in consulting. Most depends on your base pay and whether or not you are general civil and/or specialty (i.e., wastewater, enviro).
Our firm gives an immediate salary bump.
I suspect the regional average is around $5k - $10k in immediate bump. Bonus structure is probably highly variable. I know some PE's that get $1500 bonuses and some that get 10x that.

Something to add, Civil is not the glamorous engineer. Civil will never make the cash like others, however it is the stable one.
There are a lot that go public and then retire into private. TxDOT and ODot engineers get paid a ton of money when they go private because of the connections they have in public and firms want to win those contracts.
They retire with pensions and then get paid 6 figures to know people, it is a good gig

For civil's at a civil only firm, I'd guess around $1-2k.

fries go in the bag, soda goes in the cup. u dont need to be a PE for that
Posted on 8/23/16 at 2:13 pm to MahiFishn
Well that can vary greatly
My wife is PE and makes around 125k

I have no clue since the government sector could care less about PEs. The only way to make money here is to jump contracts...15% at a time. Then stick around for the 2-3 annual raises..then jump again.

I have come to realize that companies no longer pay employees for loyalty. You've got to jump ship to get a decent raise (or take better offers to your current company). My buddy went from $18/hr to $35/hr in two years doing the exact same job. He went through 3 companies to do that

This could not be further from the truth working for TxDOT. PE is absolutely required for certain positions and ALL senior positions minus the political ones. The earlier comment concerning Texas vs. Louisiana is absolutely true. TxDOT is extremely well positioned for funding over the next several years and is starving for engineers because there is tremendous incentive to retire early and move to the private side. I see young engineers moving into positions at TxDOT they could not have dreamed of 10 years ago. If you are a young person with years to invest, TxDOT is a fantastic opportunity.
