Not a fan being a conservative but amen to that. Lost my mom to cancer so I don't wish that on anyone.

Knowing the natural history of this disease as well as the expectation of the therapy he is currently receiving, please know that you and I will be discussing the widespread recurrence of his disease in the late winter or early spring, 2016.

Agree. In his situation, an MRI that's "negative" for cancer more likely means there'e no evidence of cancer on this imaging study; not quiet the same as "cancer free." Commonly, pts have a tendency to "hear what they want to" w/ these types of discussions.

Emory in Atlanta is awesome. My FIL was diagnosed with gall bladder and liver cancer back in March. He was told by his doctors in Columbus, GA that the cancer was inoperable and that the best they could do was chemo that would prolong his life but would make him sick the whole time until his death. He didn't want this, nor did we. He's an avid fisherman and that's what he wanted to do with what time he had left.
My wife and MIL called Emory to try to get him seen. They refused at first but we wrote some letters and they worked him in. They told us the same thing, inoperable. But they were doing a trial of some radiation seeds that are implanted in the leg and they offered to try it on him. It had never been tried on the gall bladder.
3 weeks ago my wife took him to Emory for a normal checkup. Cancer is gone. There are holes where the tumors were and the doctor said there are no residual cancer cells left. He says he can't guarantee it won't return, but he doubts it. After having to go 2 to 3 times a month for treatment, he now doesn't have to be seen for 3 months and then every 6 months after that to make sure it hasn't returned.
It's pretty awesome that I don't have to watch my wife break down and cry about this once or twice a week anymore.

I hope and pray that your FIL's physician is correct if that was indeed what he said. But, I can guarantee that your FIL's physician as a respected physician in oncologic care DID NOT say that your FIL's cancer is no longer detectable on a cellular level. That is impossible by our current level of technology.
I am excited to hear that locoregional efforts to eradicate locally advanced cancers such as that of your FIL are constantly being pursued, but please be careful in your description of his cancer as being eradicated at the cellular level. Lack of radiographic evidence of disease is a very different endpoint than total pathologic eradication of disease. Only time will tell us what the results of his treatment are, and I hope for him and other cancer patients that his disease truly is eradicated.

With all due respect, I am quoting his doctor. That is exactly what he told us. He said it a few times. "No residual cancerous cells".

Again, I am not in any way trying to stomp on everyone's well-deserved excitement regarding the outcome of said therapy, but sometimes physicians' desire for a positive outcome can interfere with their interpretation of the evidence at hand especially if that physician is directly involved in the design/implementation/evaluation of the clinical trial. We all strive for and want the best possible outcome.
You know as well as I do, however, that a ct or pet ct scan is a very different way to evaluate residual cancer than a microscope.
