My daughter was born 7 weeks early back in April. She was 5lbs 6oz at birth. She spent her first 28 days in the NICU ward. She was off the oxygen in a few days until her pic line floated up near her heart. It was pumping IV fluids in to her chest cavity until it collapsed a lung and was pushing her heart. They had to make an incision in her side and drain the fluid with a tube. She had to go back on oxygen for a few days after that, but eventually she made a full recovery. She's home now and growing like a weed. Just try not to stress and let the DRs and nurses take care of your grandson. Babies are tougher than they look.

My wife (no pics) is a NICU nurse. I read her your post and she said it sounds like PPHN. She tried to explain it to me but I've got no clue what she was saying. Maybe you can google it or at least use it as a starting point to ask questions to the care team. My wife said they deal with it on a regular basis. Hopefully everything goes well for the little guy.

That would explain the Nitrous oxide, so probably what they think at present...

Had similar problems with son and daughter. I am guessing your grandson is a white boy. Nurses (at least many of them) refer to white males as wimpy white boys because apparently they have weak lungs. Our daughter actually ended up in NICU a lot longer than him, though. Everything worked out great for both of them. Hope the same for you all.

Well, they made the call and he is being transported as soon as they can equip the ambulance with what they need. I am sorry that I couldn't give the medical terms because I didn't have the opportunity to talk with the doctor myself. Thanks for the concern.

NICU nurses are badass. They will get ya through this.

My son was 1lb 15oz and sectioned at 26 weeeks. We were so freaked out and scared, and the nurses said don't worry we do this every day. There will be ups and downs but expect him to go home by his due date. He went home one month before his due date. God bless the NICU staff at woman's in baton rouge. He is now almost 3 and perfectly healthy, but extremely bad.

Woman's in Baton Rouge is nationally recognized and babies with issues from all over the region are sent there. If things don't improve, I would consider asking for a transfer. Don't be afraid to question the doctors and care given. It is every bit your right to ask hard questions.

Oschners is where they have decided to send him. They, meaning my son and his wife, are trying to get my daughter- in-law discharged so she can go with him. She is not ready. But we will see what they do with that.

They're VERY good. A couple at my church had a baby that was in such bad shape they did an emergency baptism. Baby is doing fine now.

My first was born 8 weeks early and 4 pounds. She was in the NICU for 16 very long days. They told me the same thing. One day, she did great, the next not so well. They said that was completely normal and expected. Lungs and oxygen was never an issue. Just feedings. Taking in enough and gaining weight was our biggest issue. Now, she's a heathly, beautiful, spunky 7 year old.

Prayers to you and your sweet baby.

My twins were born at 23weeks weighing 1lb 5oz and 1lb 6oz. They are now 16 months old and doing great. We spent 5 months in the hospital, but the time went by fast. The NICU will take good care of your grandson. There will be good days and some not so great days, but your family will get through it and probably come out stronger than before. Hang in there

Yep, girls are just tough, mine was born at 32 weeks about 3.5lbs. They fed her through a tube for awhile, but never really had any issues. They kept saying if she was a boy, it wouldn't be this good.,,Prayers for the OP, cause Although my kid was healthy, it was still scarier than anyone can image, a total helpless feeling. My wife almost died from the pre-eclampsia, but everyone is good now..

I do not pretend to know anything about this. But I do know that one of my Godsons was born more than a month premature. He was in the NICU at Georgetown for weeks. I do not think his folks even got to hold him for a good long time.

Anyway, that was more than 36 years ago. He is a healthy young man who is celebrating his first Father's Day as a Dad.

Good luck to your grandson and your entire family. I'll say one for all of you and for the doctors and nurses caring for him.

Man that's tough. My nephew was born at 27 weeks and 1 pound 14 oz. He's currently running around my house annoying the living hell out of us. Don't focus on the negative outcomes, keep your mind on the positive ones. Pulling for him and the family.

That is what is concerning me about my daughter-in-law. She has that issue, and high blood pressure. It concerned the doctor enough to call for the early delivery. This high anxiety isn't helping her recovery. Stress needs to be redefined when it comes to your children's health.

Sorry to hear. That's not really premature birth though. Anything on or after the 37th week of pregnancy is considered term. Sounds like it is a different type of issue.

Ochsner NOLA is the better option here.

He will be in great hands at oschners. My daughter wasn't supposed to survive birth and spent a month in the nicu there. She's heading to the first grade this coming school year. Everything will be ok for you, prayers sent
