My grandson was born Thursday morning. He had to be taken because his mother was having medical issues. The scheduled date was the 24th and the birth date was the 15th. He has been in the ICU since right after birth my son was holding him when the nurse spotted breathing problems. He weighs 7 lbs. 4 ozs. They have given him oxygen, put a tube to his lungs to give oxygen, and tried nitrogen oxide to his lungs. He is also being sedated. One minute we are told that he is improving and the next we are told that we need to pray. Any experts out there that have an idea on what is happening?

Thanks for the well wishes and any prayers. There are premature babies half his size in the nursery breathing with no help. They call it weak white boy syndrome or something. Says that is is only a white boy issue.

Is 9 days early really considered that much premature?

Hope everything works out.

9 days is nothing.

One of my friends was two months early and is doing fine now.

First, all babies develop differently, so I wouldn't be worried about the smaller ones being ahead.
I have twins that were in the NICU for being premature, and one had a CPAP. They would rally, fall behind, rally, fall behind... it was really frustrating.

We celebrated their first bday yesterday and my biggest issue now is them destroying my house.

He will pull through, but pray and expect some ups and downs.

Pm me if you ever need a talk

They said the actual due date should have been the 30th if born natural. But this is their third and all have been by C-section.

honestly, that is not exceedingly premature or really even that small. I know it is touch and go for you and your family right now, but I would put my money on your little white boy.

seriously, you all will be in my prayers tonight.

9 days early , if that's the case, isn't an issue. Boys do have a harder time, but a week early shouldn't be much of an issue. Have they said, aspiration or heart defect, or patent ductus?

They are talking about some valve that affects the flow which has to adjust after birth.

My nephew was born on Nov 27th, his due date was Feb 14th. He was not given much of a chance but some top notch Dr's got him through.

The vast majority of his issues were pulmonary as well. He weighed 3lbs 2 oz at birth and it took a couple of months to get him up to weight.

That was 23 years ago. I would like to think that there have been many advancements since then that would give your Grandson even better odds.

Best wishes for the little fella.

Not really, especially with the weight.

OP...prayers sent your way. I can only imagine it must be scary as hell for you and your family. I've seen babies no bigger than a baby squirrel in the NICU thrive and the parents brought the baby back as a toddler to visit the unit. Maybe he just needs a little more time with machines doing the breathing for him so he can get better. Sounds like he had an excellent nurse to notice he was having trouble and to get what he needed asap.

The next step could be moving him to Oschners in New Orleans. St. Tammany Can only do so much.

Did they say a patent ductus arteriosis? Or heart valve?

My son talked with the doctor. It is a valve that reverses flow at some point late in the pregnancy that redirects flow. They said that his heart looks healthy. It affects the flow of the blood to the lungs is my guess.

Yeah, that's probably it, did they talk about giving indomethacin or surgery to close it?
