If you teach, you must be a pitiful one. Just because I state what most people on this site think, but won't express, I'm wrong? You believe in being correct in your thinking, but a true teacher knows that there are many ways in trying to get your point across to a classroom filled with nothing but kids who receive free lunch and breakfast. Yeah, I scared them, but I taught them. Last year a black kid that I taught over thirty years ago knocked on my front door. When I opened the door, I immediately recognized him. He thanked me for being a teacher who motivated him. He lives here in Montgomery and lives in a two story house. I had nothing but respect from those kids. I had to delete my facebook account because I couldn't keep up with all of my friends who were former students. On the first day of school, I would tell the kids that respect was a two way street, you respect me and I'll respect you.

Government school teachers almost always have an inflated opinion of their own importance.

The doctors at MD Anderson don't NEARLY save all of their patients and no one says shite but teachers are expected to make a phuckin engineer out of every student. Some were just meant to ride on the back of a truck and say, "GO AHEAD".

You sound like a teacher that I was. If it wouldn't have been for a major wreck on Burbank Drive in BR, I would still be in the class room. I loved my job and even though I'm disabled, I swear to God I wish that I would still be in the classroom today. I worked in Jefferson Parish and loved it. I worked in Ascension Parish on the westbank and it was miserable. Ascension Parish was my first job.

Did not read article or thread. This has probably already been posted but how the hell will you have a shortage of teachers when every kid could be learning in front if a computer with online classes today? You won't need school buildings or teachers. WTF

How would this be monitored? School is more than just facts and figures. Where would discipline, socialization and accountability cone from. Also, no technology can currently simulate a teacher. This is decades away at best.

This is actually becoming more and more prevalent.
Yeah, there seems to be a couple of families in my neighborhood that do this.
I'm not sure how literate they may or may not be but they sure as hell are some expert bicycle riders because they get a ton of practice.

An unfixable problem is a major cause here. If you don't want to be a parent, don't have kids. I teach in a rural area and most of the parents know me. Literally every summer, sometimes as soon as early June, I'll run into a parent at a store or somewhere else. Their first question is "When does school start back? These kids are driving me crazy."

Go into a classroom arse hole and let's see how long you last. Who can tolerate people calling you a MF and calling you names? Guess what? A black kid called me a MF and I responded by telling him that Iknow my momma and daddy and you need to ask your momma who your daddy is. When your momma tells you who your daddy is, then come back and call me a MF. I told him that his momma probably didn't know his daddy because she had a lot of men. Guess what? I was right and you have to match those ghetto kids one or one. In order to be able to teach these kids, you had to scare them. I don't care what you think because I had to delete my facebook page because of all of my grown students responding to me. How do you handle over 800 friend requests?

Almost all teachers I know are the same way..
BUT..
Education is still one of the most popular majors in college, isn't it? I know a lot of people who can't find teaching jobs.

I've taught in four different districts, including EBR, Baker, and Ascension. Of those three, Ascension was the worst. I'd rather have the African-American kids from low-income, single-parent households than the white kids who can get away with murder all because their parents let them.
Bottom line is, nowadays with this SPS (School Performance Score) bs, they are hesitant to suspend or expel anyone, so kids can get away with anything because they have no fear of repercussions.

Yea, as of a few years ago, I knew several people who were looking.
I know a lot of people who went to college, got degrees without a direct career path, and then went into teaching as a fall-back plan. Seems like people will continue to do this.

I work at an alternative school for kids expelled from regular school and they have been so bad that they are doing away with the program altogether and moving it to an online-based one. The other day 3 cop cars were called to break up a fight. We have a teacher at my school who continues to teach even when every single student is sleeping and no one is paying attention. I don't know how he does it.

Even worse are that over 95% of elementary teachers are women and this could be viewed as income inequality.
These bs reasons are why it is the way it is. Grown ups are looking out more for themselves then the kids.

Baby-sitters don't make $40k a year or get to retire at 50.

I think the minimum age a teacher can retire at now is 55.
