I've definitely found this to be true in the context of ordering one, but people definitely say they're going to the Coke machine or that they're going to grab a Coke only to come back with something different.
Exactly this isnt a hard concept. If someone is ordering a dr pepper, they will say dr pepper. The right context is something like "yeah I cant sleep I had a coke way too late"

Even when I was very young and would go out with my family, my old grandparents, who would've been born in the 19-teens, never did that. It's just one of thsoe things that keeps getting repeated so often enough that people actually believe it.

A small part of Oregon is in Mountain Time. Florida has counties in Central Time, so only one hour difference between the two.
