I always heard growing up that black-eyed peas were for health and cabbage was for wealth. Usually have pork as well but fried catfish yesterday instead.

Stewed tomatoes also. I had black eyed peas, stewed tomatoes and pork chops.

We’ ve only ever done the black eyed peas for health & cabbage for wealth.

Never heard the pork thing, heard the cornbread thing a few years ago. Seems repetitive

I feel like the cornbread part is just something made up to go with cornbread because you would always serve cornbread with black eyed peas and cabbage/greens.

I've been to a lot of New Year's parties where they had peas cooking all evening and cook up some bacon/cabbage. Right after midnight they serve peas, cabbage, and cornbread, making sure their guests are lucky and wealthy all year.
