The Astrodome is sad just sitting there. The exterior ramps were demolished but for some reason nothing else was done. I'd like to go watch the implosion if it ever happens

What happened to the "parking garage" idea?

It was a blow-up roof.

The cables supporting it failed and it most-likely blew away

I get that... was it multiple pieces of material/fabric or one giant piece?

I'm just imagining a bunch of large sheets of material blowing down the parking lot.

Pontiac is a reference to the city the stadium is located in, not the car brand

LOL, I was referring to Pontiac, MI, the city. Which is still around.

In fact, I believe the Pontiac car line was named after the Pontiac city, as GM had a large car plant there.

The big issues as I understand them are:

1) No one wants to pay the cost of demolition

2) The bonds haven't been paid off. They refinanced the bonds a number of years ago to fund improvements for the Oilers, who still left anyways.

3) The preservation have been locked in on not tearing it down.

It was really quite sad to go to Rodeo and see it just sitting there. I haven't been there since I moved to NOLA three years ago, so I imagine it looks even worse now.

I realized that after someone pointed it out to me. I'm an idiot, not a morning person.

I can understand the first two reasons but not the third. Besides, I thought they had the money to implode it. They took down the ramps and I recall there was even a date set for the rest of it. Then nothing happened.

It hasn't even been empty for 15 years, correct?

Per Wikipedia it hosted a few events in 2010 and 2011 after a long era of dormancy.

quote:

The Silverdome re-opened on April 17, 2010, with a monster truck event.

AC Milan and Panathinaikos FC played a friendly on August 6, 2010. On January 29, 2011, professional boxer Timothy Bradley defended his WBO light welterweight title in a unification fight against WBC champion Devon Alexander. The fight aired live on HBO World Championship Boxing, with an attendance of about 7,000. The owners have indicated that they are pursuing a possible expansion team for Major League Soccer, and may renovate the Silverdome for this purpose.

If I'm not mistaken, I think Seattle is still paying for the Kingdome's construction, even though it was demolished.
