I personally have encountered pit bulls out while jogging or riding bikes and i always act calm and kind. They start barking and yelling and once they see I am no threat and not scared they come up and play.
Actually had two follow me on my rub once and would bark at anything that came around me. They then followed me home.
Why do you think you one anecdotal account has any more weight than anecdotal accounts of pits attacking?
The problem isn't the normal every day encounter with these dogs. The problem is with the out of the ordinary encounter.
For example: Labs have been breed to retrieve, not fight, not damage the prey. Could a lab bite you? Sure. It happens, but it is generally a single bite and done.
Pits were originally bred to latch on and hold larger animals (bulls, bears, etc) around the face or head. They also make good catch dogs for wild hogs. They will take a beating and keep going after the hog.
Pits are/were great dogs at what they do. But you don't need a pit's skill sets in a subdivision or apartment.

I own a half-pit/half black mouth cur.
She haa the instincts of both breeds, but believe it or not she LOVES humans to a fault. I have to tell her that not all humans are nice.
Other animals she attempts to kill on the spot and has.
Found two pure bred pits outside her kennel one morning and had to coax them away. Once i did they played in the yard all day. She was spayed so no harm.
The lashing out for no reason I have no experience with and inmy take what I have been told. Takes a good owner to own one of these breeds.
