“Suicide Attempt Jump” (1949)
Chicago: Mrs. Helen Schwandt 44, is shown in the midst of a leap she made from a third-floor window before landing in the firemen’s net below. She jumped to escape the police who had come to remove her. 10-13-1949.

quote:While suicide leaps from tall buildings entered the public consciousness with the Wall Street crash (there is a photo online of a man's body having hit a parked car; I won't post it here), a new aspect was added in 1938. A man named John Warde stood on a hotel ledge for hours while a crowd gathered below and yelled for him to jump.

The Jumper: The day a young man's suicidal standoff transfixed Midtown Manhattan
In the early '50s there was a pretty good movie made about the incident, though with a happy ending substituted of course.

A friend was in New York back in the late 70's. He was walking around and there was a person threating to jump from a building. He said a crowd had gathered and they were yelling JUMP..JUMP! Just a bunch of sadistic people...

AutoZone (at the time known as AutoShack) ad from 1986. Apparently they sold bikes.
When I was a kid around this time there was a store called Western Auto that sold auto parts as well as bikes, mowers and TG&Y type stuff. I have a specific memory of being in one on Gov't St (I think) in the late '80s. Too bad they were sold to Sears and became Advance Auto Parts.

From online: “ James Dean's career as an actor and racer was cut tragically short on September 30, 1955, when his "Little Bastard" Porsche 550 Spyder was involved in a catastrophic collision on the way to a race meeting. Dean was killed instantly, but Little Bastard would go on to cause considerably more trouble.”

It was where that Radio Bar place is now (I'm assuming it's still open?). You can see how they incorporated the old auto repair bays into the bar on the side, with new roll up doors.

I still have a Western Auto scope that I bought about 1975 on a .22 lr . The rifle itself ( a Remington Mohawk 10-C) is not the original one I bought at Fed Mart about the same time, but one I bought a few years ago for nostalgia's sake.
