1928 Miss Universe Winner, Ella Van Heusen, Miss Chicago.

Also known as the Pageant of Pulchritude. Pageant was held in Galveston.

Pulchritude, that has to be an ESPN Sports Center word.

The places the contestants represent is different, a mixture of US cities, states, and foreign countries.

Here's the reference to Miss Fleeta Doyle, Miss Biloxi

1960s Summer Theatre in Dayton. I guess there was some money for the stars in these theatre shows around the country.

Damn, hell of a line-up of stars for the summer theater run.

Lots of big name stars in the billing for a local production.

I remember in the '70s the Beverly Playhouse in Jefferson Parish regularly had a dinner play featuring usually one "Star," generally a "fading" one. I remember Bob Crane from "Hogan's Heroes" was the headliner one time. The only time I went the star was Cesar Romero, The Joker from the '60s TV Batman.

The Beverly, which had been an illegal casino just across the Parish line from New Orleans up until around the '50s (I'm not sure exactly, before my time) burned down in the early '80s, I think.

Apparently these are not the eyes of the film's stars, Scott Wilson & Robert Blake.

Instead they belong to the actual murderers, Dick Hickok & Perry Smith

Dinner theatre was a way to make a little money during the TV hiatus season. It also allowed actors to keep up their live theater chops, and showcase their singing & dancing talents. For character actors it was a chance to play leading roles they'd never be offered in H'wood.

When I was still in single digits my family visited the gulf coast. I recall seeing a TV commercial for Michael Cole (Mod Squad) in A Streetcar Named Desire. "A great dinner & a great play. What more can you ask for?"

Also recall seeing a newspaper ad for Hayden Roarke (Dr Bellows) in a dinner theater production.

Bob Crane, as it happens, was murdered while on the dinner theatre circuit.

"On June 28, 1974, while preparing for a performance in the comedy play Luv at the Beverly Barn Dinner Playhouse in Shreveport, Louisiana, Sutton died of a heart attack."

Dinner Theater can be deadly.

Blackfoot Indians on the roof of the Hotel McAlpin, New York City, 1913. They had the choice of any room in the hotel but instead chose to sleep on the roof. Many had never left the reservation.
