Timber Railroad Bridge

I’m thinking that’s all iron.

Now Herman Haupt for the Union during the Civil War reconstructed bridges out of what ever was at hand in rural Virginia.

“Haupt was called to service in early 1862 and put in charge of the operations of military railroads in the Virginia theater of operations. He could also get railroads and bridges repaired in short order.

One of his most famous feats was the speedy reconstruction of a railroad bridge a few miles north of Fredericksburg, Virginia, a job that greatly impressed the commander-in-chief, Abraham Lincoln, even though the bridge looked flimsy.

In a visit on May 28, Lincoln observed, "That man Haupt has built a bridge four hundred feet long and eighty feet high, across Potomac Creek, on which loaded trains are passing every hour, and upon my word, gentlemen, there is nothing in it but cornstalks and beanpoles." Haupt and the Construction Corps mastered the art of bridge reconstruction during the war.”

Julie-dAubigny, famous opera singer who died at age 33

She killed three men in duels, and Zwas pardoned for her duels, this time through the intervention of Monsieur, the King’s brother, and returned to the stage. She performed for the court at Versailles, appeared once again in most major Opéra productions, and introduced the Italian idea of the contralto voice to France. She defended chorus girls against lecherous barons and pompous tenors, became infatuated with the soprano Fanchon Moreau, tried to kill herself, threatened to blow the Duchess of Luxembourg’s brains out, and ended up in court for attacking her landlord. She and Thévenard remained best of friends until her retirement, although they also had some infamous spats, and one evening on stage she bit his ear so hard he bled.

Many years ago, they were selling the original figures from the cave. I wish I had bought one.

No bookbags-that was me, even into college. Had a book satchel in Jr High. Books wrapped with a strap were before my time. In grade school rode a bicycle to school and carried my books in a Boy Scout backpack. Wasn't smart enough to keep using one.
