We're moving my mother into my brother's home and packing the last of the boxes to be moved. Ran across some very interesting photos from way back when West Virginia's first oil wells were being drilled. Dad had collected some of these photos from people he met as a young, newly graduated petroleum engineer from LSU who was beginning his career with Columbia Gas in 1954. All of these wells predate his time in West Virginia (if not his birth as well).

This is one of the first oil wells drilled in Gilmer County, West Virginia.

Just thought I'd share some old photos (more coming in later posts) of a few oil and gas wells from the Appalachian oil and gas fields. I can imagine that seeing oil derricks on mountainsides is probably a bit strange for people who usually see them in swamps or off shore.

Right click and "open image in new tab" to see the full size photo.

This one is near the small town of War, WV. It's hard to determine the exact date this photo was made, but the automobiles in the photo give at least an inkling of an idea. The derrick for this well was being assembled at the time the photo was taken.

The hilly, and sometimes mountainous, terrain of West Virginia made it difficult and frequently impossible to carry equipment to the well locations with powered vehicles. Teams of oxen were used to deliver materials to wells even into the late 1930s and early 1940s in some regions.

This photo comes from near Griffithsville in Lincoln County, WV up Garrett's Bend Rd near the head of Turkey Creek. Pennzoil operated eight oil wells on the property of Kenneth Spurlock (later owned by Freeman E. Goode) from 1926 through the 1980s. Even today, in 2023, the wells are occasionally started up to pump residual oil that slowly refills the reservoir beneath them. Much of the equipment and machinery used in the wells is original to the day they first went into production.

Sometimes it actually was possible to use tracked machinery to deliver equipment to the production wells. Of course, it doesn't look particularly safe or well balanced going up the hillside like this.

Last natural gas well photo for the day. Not sure where exactly this one was. Photo wasn't labeled. Could be Lincoln County, could be McDowell County. Pretty certain it's not Kanawha County due to the steepness of the hillside.

Though the habit is much more rare than then, this etiquette should still hold true today.
