Mud Run train collision, 1884, 64 people killed - the scene looks oddly tranquil but the telescoping of one coach through another would decimate the passengers in the telescoped car.

Being telescoped was a horrible way to go ...

Steel construction was supposed to stop the telescoping of trains, but it has only mitigated it. In 2008, a Metrolink (L.A.) train ran a signal (engineer was texting) and had a collision with a UP freight train. This car (inside view) had a 34 linear foot (almost 1/2 the passenger compartment) telescopic incursion from the UP locomotive. Many of the 25 fatalities were in this car.

1863 Harpers Weekly photos of emancipated slaves from New Orleans.

quote:

Isaac White is a black boy of eight years, but nonetheless intelligent than his whiter companions. He has been in school about seven months, and I venture to say that not one boy in fifty would have made as much improvement in that space of time.

Rosina Downs is not quite seven years old. She is a fair child, with a blonde complexion and silky hair. Her father is in the rebel army. She has one sister as white as herself and three brothers who are darker. Her mother, a bright mulatto, lives in New Orleans in a poor hut and has hard work to support her family.
