False, it was started by a yankee general and soon all the northern states celebrated it. After WW1 it was expanded to honor all those who have died as members of the United States Armed Forces. Per Wikipedia.
Nice try though.

The holiday's exact origins are uncertain, but it came out of Civil War traditions of decorating the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers. Many cities and individuals claimed to have been the first to celebrate the event.

According to the United States Library of Congress website, "Southern women decorated the graves of soldiers even before the Civil War’s end. Records show that by 1865, Mississippi, Virginia, and South Carolina all had precedents for Memorial Day."[11] The earliest Southern Memorial Day celebrations were simple, somber occasions for veterans and their families to honor the dead and tend to local cemeteries.

Teamsters president Jimmy Hoffa salutes Attorney General Bobby Kennedy during testimony at a hearing. Kennedy called Hoffa "the most dangerous man in America." After Kennedy's death Hoffa said, "He wasn't a good attorney general - in all probability, a worse Senator. I would hate to think what would happen if he became president of the United States. He'd probably have a fascist government."
