My grandmother's brother, Pvt Brooks C Bowles, rescued his wounded company commander at the Battle of Cantigny in France in May 1918. For his actions, he received the Silver Star. The company commander he rescued was Maj. Theodore Roosevelt, Jr.

Roosevelt had to use a cane to get around after recovering from the wounds sustained at Cantigny in 1918 and led the Allied landing at Utah beach in person as a Brigadier General, armed with a pistol and his cane.
