Does anyone know the cost of inpatient services for physical therapy and speech rehab. A relative needs both and her insurance will not cover it. Trying to get an idea of a daily cost and what the family is looking at. Thanks in advance for the help!

I don't know the details of why. But that's the hand that's been dealt so I'm trying to do some homework for them while they are at the hospital. Google didn't give much info, most things I could find were for alcohol and drug rehab.

Well without knowing condition it's hard to say that's all I'm trying to get at.

If this is a spinal cord injury, I wouldn't worry about inpatient rehab as much as I would be concerned on care throughout the lifespan

I guess the insurance company doesn't seem the condition medically necessary for ot and speech.

When I think of pt and speech I think of a stroke, Tia, onset of Parkinson's etc

If it is inpatient as in living weeks at the rehabilitation center it will be very expensive. My guess would be about 1,000 a day.

If they stay somewhere else and go to therapy an hour each a day then more like 200-300 a day.

You can stay at home or with a relative and receive these services a few times a week in your house as home health services.

I would go the home health or outpatient route if possible if you have to pay yourself.

My wife is a speech pathologist.

$100/ hour is a starting billable rate.

I think PT is a little more than speech.

If you are talking about inpatient, you are talking about a lot of money. Especially if you are looking at two weeks or so. Is the patient not safe to go home and receive PT and speech with home health?

It was a stroke. They don't know the amount of rehab needed yet but are recommending Toro in New Orleans. Left side has minimal feeling as of now and speech is okay but they said she will need both.

Why doesn’t insurance cover it?

Won’t cover therapy in the acute care hospital, or won’t cover an admission to an acute inpatient rehabilitation facility?

DTA- I see it was a stroke. My post was therefore irrelevant.

Not sure what kind of insurance would deny inpatient rehab for a patient that has had a major stroke which is what you seem to be describing

Plan on $2 per minute for the speech side. You may be a little less.

Talk to the rehab nurse liaisons at Touro. Get a PM+R doc to do a consult on the patient and recommend acute rehab. Then have doc do a peer-to-peer review with the insurance doctor.

Make sure acute therapist document that he/she can tolerate “three hours of therapy/day”.

Talk to the social worker or case manager at the hospital. They will be able to help formulate a plan. Is the insurance Humana by any chance? If so then they will have a hard time getting it approved. They are notorious for denying authorization for inpatient rehab. Another question- is the insurance outright denying inpt rehab or are they denying Touro specifically because it is out of network?

In any case, there are appeals processes.

During this 3-6 month period will be the time where most of the gains in functionality will take place.

Depending on where the bleeding occurred, there could definately be some motor planning, sequencing, and cognitive issues that will need to be addressed. Visual field and acuity may be affected too so can visual neglect (not recognizing one side of the body)

Hopefully occupational therapy will be needed too
