The guy tried to get some evidence so maybe the police can find the thief. If he didn't, chances are the place might get targeted again.
He's admitted it probably wasn't the smartest thing to do but he tried to get some pictures of the perpetrator.

P.S. And I wholly respect your own decision to not do anything in that situation. If it were my family I would have hoped they stayed inside, kept their heads down, and stay safe.
