After Leah Chase.

quote:

Brent Rosen, president and CEO of the Southern Food and Beverage Museum, has started a petition to rename Lee Circle as “Leah Circle” in honor of chef Leah Chase, New Orleans’ matriarch of Creole cuisine who ran Dooky Chase’s Restaurant and whose family was known for its civil rights activism. Chase died Saturday (June 1) at age 96.

Mayor Mitch Landrieu left office without finalizing plans for Lee Circle. A bare pedestal remains in the center of the traffic circle in the Central Business District. Mayor LaToya Cantrell has said that she would like to make a decision on the circle’s future during her term as mayor.

As of early this morning, more than 700 people had signed the online petition.

Agreed. But have to note the speed of response. That was fast.

Perhaps don't name it after a person at all?

This won't sit well with the OT. They are more focused on honoring a racist general than a black woman.

I respect the hell out of Leah Chase.

But no, it's Lee Circle.

Leah is great, and I don’t have problem with statues coming down/names changing but don’t like it being sooooo similar with Lee to leah. Was a much bigger fan of the toussaint idea a few years ago if doing this

It sounds like a waste to focus on this. People who care one way or the other about "Lee Circle" are pretty silly, but I'm all for honoring her another way and moving on.
