I'm a veterinarian working in a specialty practice. I've seen people be able to do some life-saving, amazing things for their pets that wouldn't have been possible without insurance. I think it certainly has its place, but there are plenty of dogs who never have issues until they get old.

Like others have said, each provider is different. I've had more experience with Trupanion recently and my clients have seemed happy with it.

Well worth it if you don't plan on putting a dog down for a high bill.
Had to put our dog down a few years ago due to a back injury and the surgery was going to cost $8,000 and there was no guarantee it would help her. I wanted to at least have the surgery and give her a chance but at that price we couldn’t do it. Having to put down the best dog I’ve ever had because of money still crushes me to this day and it’s been over 2 years now. We bought pet insurance after and have an account we put money into specifically for that kind of stuff.

I never want to have to do that awful shite again because I couldn’t afford it

Has anyone on the OT ever purchased pet insurance for their dog? Is it worth it? Is there a company you would recommend? Any advice on this is appreciated.

My lovely, amazing 4 year old dog had a ruptured disk causing paralysis this year.

She had to have emergency spinal surgery and is at about 2 months post-op with twice-weekly PT. The amount we have paid LSU thus far and are likely to pay over the next 4 months of her recovery is staggering.

She’s at about 90% full return to function and doing amazingly well so we don’t doubt our choice to proceed with the intervention but - pet insurance would have been incredibly worth the cost for us - but with insurance - hindsight is always 20/20.

My wife and I both have good jobs so we were able to take the cost on without much hesitation- but I think about all the folks who can’t take on that kind of cost and have to put their beloved pets down.

I say if you can afford it, do it. You never know what can happen.

I hear you but there's always the chance of: getting clipped by a car, cancer, a kid dropping it and breaking a leg, eating something it can't digest and needing exploratory surgery. It's nice having the peace of mind that any emergency can be covered w/out denting my wallet.

I'm lower class, but I"m interested in pet insurance because I have two dogs who are middle aged.

I would check with Nationwide, and then when they are 9 - 10 years move to Trupanion although you would still have a 30 day wait period to avoid existing issues (keep Nationwide in-force until Trupanion kicks in.) We had really good results with Nationwide plus my wife was getting a significant discount through her employer, and currently have a 2 yr old and 10+ year old with Trupanion and pay out of pocket for most vet situations.

I totally agree. Pet insurance is a great thing to have even if just for peace of mind. It definitely makes my life way easier when I recommend a surgery that costs a couple thousand dollars, and clients don’t bat an eye because they have insurance
