A lot more than you think, their parents pretend it isnt there.

It is a HUGE problem in lower grades of public schools.

You really have a depressing outlook on life. Most intelligent people I know seem to be quite pleased with their lives.

It's all relative. I used to work for a company that provides in-home care for the elderly and mentally disabled, and I spent a lot of time helping parents care for their autistic and Down's syndrome children, as well as a couple of adults with Down's syndrome. I've seen some very depressing things, and I don't envy any parent who has to deal with the day-to-day medical and emotional responsibilities of raising a kid with any disability. But for the most part, people with Down's syndrome are the happiest, most loving humans I've ever met. I can understand the notion of wanting to be in their shoes for a day.

People with Downs aren't "dumb". Dumb is having the ability to learn and expand one's intelligence to the fullest...and choosing not to do so. Come on dude.

Being dumb doesn't mean you have the capability of being smart.

So, just so I'm clear on your views on this, you see people with Down's as dumb, and as a result, they are happy?

A few thoughts on this thread.

1) I understand the notion of envying people with Down Syndrome. Trading your intelligence for happiness. Not saying I would do it, but I get it.

2) I know several black people with Down Syndrome. I think it's just as common. There may be cultural and socioeconomic reasons you don't seem to see them, never mind the obvious fact that you're talking about a small minority of a small minority.

I'm saying that they are less intelligent and can not fathom the world in the way that even people of mid-level intelligence can. Additionally I don't think someone with an IQ in the mid-90s can comprehend the world and their place in it in the same way a guy with the IQ of 130 can. If you put two people with an IQ of 85 and an IQ of 140 in the same environment (same social standing, same job, same class, etc.), I'd bet serious cash that the guy with the IQ of 85 is happier than the one with an IQ of 140. The dumber you are, typically the more easily satisfied you are. It's very difficult to satisfy a highly intelligent person.

Yeah, I guess I never really took a step back and thought "Man, this kid sure is enjoying shooting hoops with me today. Must be because he has a low IQ. If only he understood particle physics, his life would blow." I comprehend your argument, but I must disagree. Calling someone who is mentally challenged "dumb" makes it tough to take the rest of your legitimately well thought out argument seriously.

I've never really thought of a down syndrome individual as being "dumb," but I consider them as being "limited." If an adult has the mental capacity of a six year old, I wouldn't call that "dumb," because they are limited to that mental stage. There is an innocence about the people with downs I have met, and I never once misconstrued that as being "dumb."

Calling a down syndrome person "dumb" is very archaic, much like the term "mongoloid."

Why are you so hung up on semantics?

Just pretend he's saying "unintelligent". You know what he means.

Kids with down syndrome do seem to be happy a lot, but that can quickly change once they start going through puberty, especially those with more mild cases. They start to understand exactly what they're missing out on.

Because I have a family member with Downs and that shite is offensive.

Because I don't agree with that either.

You're mistaking immediate satisfaction with long term happiness. Yeah, plenty of things give me satisfaction for a temporary period, but something tells me that they're typically short term for most people.

So what should I call people with Down Syndrome? Intelligent? Calling them dumb, which my definition is lacking intelligence, is much nicer than some of the other words you'll hear around here. Sorry, but politically correct terms are simply bullshite.

Dumb isn't always meant as an insult. I.e. the term deaf dumb and blind

That's like calling someone the N-word and saying, "Well, you know he just meant "Black people."

dumb can mean unintelligent or it can be somewhat of a synonym for retarded (like inhibited) as in dumbed down or retarded development.

yes certain areas will show lack of development, but others can be normal.

Well that's too bad. Because intelligence generally means the inborn capacity for learning and perception. Intelligence quota is an attempt to measure this, thus someone's IQ should never increase or decrease during their lifetime (barring damage or decomposition of the mind)

That's the word we have in daily conversation to distinguish. It's the difference between being intelligent and being smart.

Your offense taken is meaningless. Being offended does not wield power or make you special. If you choose to not engage in a conversation because of your offense, that's your prerogative. But you don't get to use your offense to control the conversation or demand anything of anyone.

Too many people today are using the two words "I'm offended" as conversational, social, and political currency. It's bullshite.
