People With Controlling Significant Others

Anyone have any stories about a couple in which one of them are extremely controlling?
There is an older couple I am familiar with (when I say older, I mean late 50s) in which the husband is extremely controlling. The wife can be talking with a group of people, laughing, etc and the second he comes around she will stop talking and put her head down.
I've heard stories about other things he has done, but I don't know how accurate they are, but it wouldn't be surprising considering how obviously controlling he is. But he does whatever he wants, however; he expects his wife to only do what he tells her. And there have been times when the wife has gone somewhere (shopping, visit a friend, etc) while he was hunting and because she wasn't home when he returned home, he was completely pissed (I don't think he physically abused her, but evidently when he gets pissed he get verbally abusive).
This is just a general summary of this situation and I know most of the responses will be "that's how it should be", "she better stay in the kitchen all day", etc, but in the past, there have been friends of the wife, who tried talking to her concerned she was being mentally abused, at the least, and evidently she has no problem with it. She has said that's how a marriage should work..
Anyone know a couple(s) like this? What about the other side of it? The wife being in complete control?

Don't worry after a few months he will start to trust you more and let you go out with your friends without him.

I'll admit it. My wife doesn't allow me to go to lunches with other posters If there is females their.
I also report to her at the end of the day how I spent my time for the whole day.
It keeps me on track and out of trouble.
