I worked for a company that is always in the top 5 or 6 of the Fortune 500 list, every employee that drove a company car had to take annual safe driving class, and in that class you were taught to back in wherever possible.

This. Plus I park straighter on the first try when I back in than when I pull into a spot.

In many situations it makes much more sense to back in. I assume you have lived a sheltered life with little to no experiences out of your comfort zone.

I think he's mad because he doesn't know how to back in so, he gets pissed when he sees someone else do it.

I hardly ever back in, but it's probably going to become more common because those reverse cameras are now pretty standard. It feels a lot more accurate than even parking forwardly because the perspective of the camera is closer to the bumpers.

Backing in was engrained in me while I was in the Army. It just makes more sense. You can make a quick get away if you need to.

I back my truck into spots 99.9% of the time. Easier to get out when I leave and makes sure that I won't get stuck in a small spot if people park too close on the side.

eta: I also back in when I have rental cars so it's just a habit thing now. Sorry you have to wait 10 seconds while I park.

Can we get back to the turning radius debate? Actually, I don't think the turning radius changes between forward and reverse. What does change is the end of the vehicle where wheels are fixed and the one where they can rotate. When the wheels that rotate are on the end of the vehicle going in last, it makes it easier to adjust/fine-tune and therefore easier to park. Amirite?

Well, that's clearly not what I said.

But I would say a slight majority of the black folks do it and a vast minority of the white folks.

Its interesting. I have brought it up with my boss who is a black lady and she laughed and now points it out to me. Its not racist, just a funny observation.

ETA:

And I don't get why the OP cares about this. Seems bizarre.

The reason they do it is kind of racist.

It's about appearances.

At work is different, I pull in at an angle and block two spots between two concrete bollards. We have 300 parking spots and only use about 50.

I doubt he's ever owned a truck. Otherwise he would know that it's easier to back in than it is to back out of a tight space.

No and yes. Yes it is easier to fine tune. That same reason decreases the turning radius.

Sort of like the luggage carts at a hotel. They turn easy if you steer from one end and turn like crap from the other end of the cart.

Yes, I agree, but still not sure turning radius changes. Maybe I don't understand the definition of turning radius.

My truck is 25ft long. It takes two to three times as long for me to pull into a spot forward than reverse if I'm trying to be even between the lines.

Make bigger parking spots, and I'll pull in forward

Eta: I pull cars in forward

IMO, if you drive in a circle forwards or backwards, the circle is the same right?

I've got a long wheelbase truck. Our driveway has a wall between us and the neighbor. You cannot pull forward into the double carport without going into reverse and forward a couple of times when the other car is present, however, backing up is no problem at all. Backing out once you are in the place would be a nightmare. Sorry you don't understand, but it's true.

Turning radius does not change. It is fixed by the max angle your tires can turn. Pivot point changes

I back into my parking spots 99% of the time, the other 1% I'm lucky enough to find two spots open back to back where I can pull all the way through and end up with the same result.

I can hold you up shortly while I back in on the first try, or I can hold you up while I make a 3 point turn trying to pull in because my turning radius sucks. Your choice...
