Because when the retire they get to start collecting pension money.
A lot nurses I work with do this. Our hospital is part of the AZ retirement system(pension). Your monthly pension is based on an average of the last few years you worked. I've known nurses that worked tons of overtime the last couple years before they wanted to retire so their pension amount would be much, much more than their usual salary. They then retired...waited the mandatory 3 months, and came back as part time. So they collect their pension every month and work once a week.

Coworker retired, works part time (29 hours) from May through September. Gets a pension plus pay for working part time.

Also...some people come back for health coverage. If you retire before 65 you might be fully responsible for your health insurance.

If it's not in my job description, frick that. Train them yourself.

My neighbor retired and a few days later his wife passed away. He went back to work a couple of weeks later.

Retire. Return on your terms. Not rocket science.

I hear there is a time frame you need to wait after retirement. Like 6 months or so. After that, you adjust from your schedule of working your whole life, and enjoy retirement.

Some companies require to to wait 6 months to go back.
One could always go to work for another company though

I retired and then came back 3 months later and started working part-time. They would never have let me work part-time if I hadn't quit first.

I mean like you wait because you need time to break that mental cycle.

Most of the people that do this either never truly planned on retiring or they have no life. I honestly don't know how anyone chooses to work for someone other than themselves if they have the finances to retire. Get your money in the bank and enjoy life, hell the biggest reason to retire early is so you are healthy enough to enjoy retirement. It's not easy to scuba dive, play golf, hike the Appalachian trail, etc when you are 75.
I think it's kinda sad to retire and want to go back to work if you don't need the money. Think outside the box a little and explore the world.
Eta: working part time in retirement is different. If you still have loads of new time to live, travel, see your family, etc. that working full time didn't allow that's different.
The idea of 'retiring' completely from working is overrated. But I think the idea of financial independence is under rated.

A lot of people depend on their work to keep them moving day to day and don't have any creative hobbies or a social comradery outside of that other than the wife that they chose in their early years because they felt like that was what they were "supposed to do" at the time and realize how empty an existence they've tricked themselves into living and have to go back to the only thing that they feel a purpose in.
