My grandfather did 20 years in military, retired with pension and then spent another 20 years in tmber sales, retired with pension, then another 20 years in manufacturing sales and retired finally at the age of 78 . Enjoyed the money until age 91 and left no debts or burdens to any of his family.
The inate urge to pull your own weight still exists in some humans today.

All of the security guards at my office building are retired corrections officers drawing pensions and just come to work now to get out of the house for $13/hr play money and what use is a bmw if you have nowhere to drive it.

Cash in on their pension.
When my dad turned 55, he retired and his pension was $1 million. He came back later as a consultant for more money than he was making before.
So he got to collect $1 million bucks, take a year off and come back as a consultant pressure-free while making more money than before.
It's so much nicer after already collecting your retirement pension and being "retired" to go back and only do work on projects or something. It almost feels like collecting free money because you call your own shots now. It's a worry-free paycheck... you're already retired!

Why is that unreasonable? A lot are there now. Some are there already and arent 40 yet. Thats only $156k a year.

Assume boredom or money or greater flexibility than one had before.
Am semi-retired, which suits me just fine, and have never considered returning from where I retired

Most of the people that I know who come back have had a little trouble adjusting to life after retirement. frankly, it is hard to suddenly stop doing something when you have done it every day for literally 40 years. Most don't say they miss the work, but miss the social interaction with their coworkers.

Some people who work for great companies get to be set for retirement financially at 55 or 60 if they want it. It's not uncommon for guys to retire and then the company hire them back as contractors making insane money to come back to get them through a big project or something. Some people have a very disirable skill set so it works out for both parties. Plus, the guy probably still gets insurance paid or at a cheap rate being retired and doesn't need pension or 401-k through the contractors, so he can just get paid a bunch more.
