I'd argue that the delivery method is a bad idea in this day and age. But thanking someone for an interview is never a bad idea.

They are doing their own thing by doing something that is unique in our everyday culture. They "belong" to a group of outcasts. They are fitting in with their one particular group. That doesnt mean that gauged ears is normal. It means it is normal within their group.
