I am a step-dad to what is now a grown women with a family (mid 30's).
Every situation is different. In our case I married her mom when she was 4. We always had a good relationship and she never met her dad until after she graduated HS at which point she spent 1 month with him during the summer. Once she returned she never reached out to him or said anything about visiting him again. Also, he never made an effort to reach out to her and stay connected.
I am blessed because for all practical purposes I am the only father she has known. Her family and my natural daughter (her half sister.. 27) spent the day together yesterday and had a great time.

Okay, my dad died and my mom remarried, but I am sorry your family has several bad relationships in which both parties are not happy, but they don't want to divorce because they are concerned people will think they are "trashy".
