I remember the days when people could be trusted if a kid got lost...

But NYCity? You were lucky.

With the way the cars were lining the street, the chances of a car driving thru, not seeing anything, and the kid stepping further out was highly likely.

My adrenaline is going again just thinking about what could've happened.

I used to work at an after school daycare center. Looking back, these people were insane having just 3 of us 17 year olds employed caring for ~60+ children. One of the children was the sweetest little girl who had a condition where she would never mentally go beyond the age of a 2-year-old. She was non-verbal, but could make noises and whatnot. She was 5 at the time, so they moved her from the daycare portion into our after-care so she could be around kids her physical (not mental, remember) age. TERRIBLE IDEA.

So us three 17 year old girls are watching 60+ hellions plus this special needs baby. One day, we can't find her anywhere. She had escaped the fenced in field (like 3 acres of land, also a dumb idea) that the kids played in and was out front near the road. I never freaked out so much.

We made the daycare switch her back to the toddler class in the indoor daycare after that.

During a early 90's Mardi Gras my family and I were catching a day parade on St. Charles in front of the Whitney Bank. My older brother was a hyper child and would constantly move in and out of crowds during parades from excitement. Well, this particular day my 5' aunt was there but watching from the very back of the crowd. When my brother's excitement caused him to snake through the crowd for beads; a strange man placed his hands on his shoulders to guide him away. My aunt noticed my brother wasn't running through the crowd so she looked to her left and saw this man attempting to abduct my brother. She ran over, grabbed him and ran into the crowd to try and get away. I distinctly remember the look of shock on her face. She alerted my father but when my father turned to look for the guy he was gone.

My brother was probably 10 and I was 7. We still catch most Mardi Grad parades in front of the Whitney Bank.

My family and I were going on a vacation when I was a kid, the morning we were supposed to leave I overslept and they completely forgot about me until it was to late. Two burglars terrorized me the whole time until I decided to fight back, I booby trapped the house and managed to survive.

Was driving down a two lane road in the right lane with a car on my left. It's a somewhat busy area where I live and the speed limit is 35. I was doing maybe 40 when out of nowhere I see a young black kid(maybe 8-10) run right in front of my car. I braked hard and swerved to the left nearly hitting the car on my left. He looked up at me and our eyes locked as he ran past me. If I had to guess I was maybe 6 feet from hitting him. Still makes me sick thinking about how close he was to death.

The narrow little street that I lived on growing up had a ton of Vietnamese families who would let their 3 & 4 year olds play out on the sidewalks all day. Every time a car passed them, you could put money on it that the kids would dart out in front at the last second and the car would have to slam on the breaks avoid a near killing. We nicknamed them kamikazes. Luckily, none of the little shits ever got hit.

When I was 19 my college roommate and I were riding our motorcycles back from a festival in south Arkansas at 2am. This particular stretch of highway had two lanes and was unlit. No houses or towns for several miles. Anyway, we were going about 90, and my roommate was riding in front of me when a deer darted out in front of him. He went right through it and the rear end half flew up and knocked me off into a ditch. Luckily I was wearing full gear and walked away with just a broken wrist. My bike was fricked though.

Didn't even see that

I'll chalk that up to being at work and on mobile.

Anyway that's the closest I've come to meeting my maker so I thought I'd share.

I was about 16 or 17 when this happened. I was going down hwy 42 towards Port Vincent/Amite River around 3-4 in the afternoon. They have a couple curves where you can't completely see cars coming from the other direction. Well I was doing about 45-50(speed limit 45) approaching one of the curves and a lady comes flying around the curve in my lane. There was another vehicle behind her, so I wasn't going to have enough time to avoid her by moving into the oncoming lane. So I just held down the horn and she swerved back into her lane literally seconds before we collided head on. We locked eyes as she passed and she was holding a damn phone in her hand! I was shaking for the next 10 min.
