I do the math for my friends and family all the time:
To raise your child in LA, by the time they graduate HS, costs you $200k.
Taxes
Private school
Insurance
All of those factors add up to $200,000.
It’s simply not worth it.
You don't have to pay for private school. Just move to the suburbs. That's what most people that live out of state do anyway.

Raised 3 kids there. All left after college for jobs.
Wife and I looked at each other and said WTF are we doing here?
That was 10 years ago. No regrets.

You did your kids a huge favor. Now they won't have to have the dilemma of moving back to Louisiana to be closer to you or enjoy a better quality of life elsewhere.
Many friends of mine who remain in Louisiana only do so cause their parents are still there and getting older. They don't want to leave them. I would imagine once their parents pass away they will leave.

This is so true. I was born and raised in NOLA. I live in Nevada now. It’s refreshing to live in a place where construction actually gets finished, you feel safe, uneven roads don’t brutalize your car and weather is pretty nice for 9 months (granted, summers are hot but the dry heat is much better than the feeling of walking around in cookie dough).
It’s amazes me how many natives are stuck on living in LA but I guess the draw of “having my mamma, my sister and them” down the road is too strong.

Friend of mine moved to Vegas (Summerlin)a few years ago with her husband and kids.
They love it there. She loves that they can send their kids to a good public school and not pay tuition. They love exploring the area around there. She hates having to come back and spend money to visit LA but does it out of obligation to visiting family. If she didn’t have family there she would never return to even visit.

I haven't been back to Louisiana to visit family in over a decade. It works out much better for me to just buy plane tickets for my family members to come visit me.
I cover all of their travel costs and never have to go back. That's a fair trade in my book.

Born 1949, and raised in NOLA. Wife born and raised there also. Public schools. Went to (LS)UNO
Both have graduate degrees - first in our families with even one degree.
3 kids born there 1980-84.
Moved away in 1984. Best gift we could have given them.
Experienced severe culture shock, but stuck it out.
Discovered we could still “do” NOLA food at home, teach our kids about their heritage, and be New Orleanians from afar.
Settled in Kentucky, 1987. Near Louisville.
Pretty much raised our kids there.
Visited home and family at least once every year.
Left KY for GA in 2001. Near Atlanta.
Our 3 kids each got their various degrees from GA universities.
Moved to FL in 2006.
Kids married - currently settled in GA, VA, TX. 5 grandkids since.
Retiring this year - will move to Dallas Ft. Worth area.
Still try to visit fam in LA at least once a year.
Do not plan to ever move back to NOLA or LA.
We love our memories, but not the present reality of life there.

Eta: Six months after graduating ME, I'd say around half of the people I finished with didn't have ME jobs. Some people were making $35-50/hr waiting tables, so they aren't in any hurry to start an actual career
You're also closer to 40 years old, where it took you over 15 years to complete your BS in mechanical eng. You're comparing apples to oranges with those kids that are 22-25 years old waiting tables. Getting drunk after work and doing copious amounts blow appeals to some, and they don't have to arrive at work until 5 pm the next day in the restaurant biz, where starting a career can take a backseat for a few years.

50,000 was the estimate last year for leaving which was up sharply. The number leaving is and has been for a long time much higher than the number moving in.
I left for a long while and made double what I was making here. I came back to retire because I love it here, but wages here are low. Doesn't matter what you do you can make more somewhere outside of Louisiana.

Overall I just get the feeling more people are moving away than moving here
I'm 36, moved me, wife, and kid 1.5 yrs ago. Tired of being subjected to a job market that goes up and down as oil goes. Found a PM job in wastewater in Fl and bolted.

Summerlin's a great part of the Valley. Close to Red Rock, lots of nice new developments out that way, including the Golden Knights' practice facility and the brand new baseball stadium.
Also, for those missing New Orleans food...one of the few legit New Orleans style places in the valley (Lola's) has one of its locations there.

Unfortunately this. Love my state and loved growing up there but will most likely never live there again.

My mom lives in Summerlin (for the time being she will move with us). It is a really nice area. Very pretty there.

That's where I'm at personally. There's many things about Louisiana / New Orleans that I still enjoy (especially a majority of the people) and when I miss it too much, I travel back for a while and catch up with those places and with family / old friends. There's always an initial rush to being back and it ultimately begins to give way to me looking around and going, "yeah. this is why I left." Sadly, the process seems to take a little less time each time I visit.

I've been there a few times. Nice place, situated between the two rinks, where you can go outside and sit by either one. They also have VGK sponsored watch parties for many of the away games. Good times.

That pizza place started in my hometown (Bozeman, MT), so I was super excited to see they had expanded to Vegas last time I was there. Nice hockey rink too.

My dad has a place in Springhill Park, MT. I haven't been yet but plan on it this summer. I've been to Bozeman several times though.
