This is where I had a problem. I can make it work, but I feel like shite in doing it. It's hard not to take that stuff home.
I could be a good salesperson, not a great one.

This is the best advice I've ever received. It is exactly what I was told from a coworker/supervisor at my new job. She warned me before my first official day that I should NOT attach my work e-mail to my phone and I should NOT jump up any time my boss wants me (when I'm not at work).
She made the mistake, and she ends up meeting with him every Saturday and doing a lot of work during her off time.
Hell, I made the mistake of adding myself to his cell the other day so I could text myself a photo he had. He didn't have my # saved previously. I deleted the text once I sent it so he wouldn't realize I was added to his phone and he STILL noticed I was added to his contact list and called me the next day to chat about work while I was trying to "airplane mode" my phone for a flight
I'm young and have a long way to go as far as my future goes, but being 24/7 employee is just not something I'm interested in ever.

not an option if company pays for cell phone
If they don't there's no way I'd do company business on it

Sales people (at least good ones) do own their own business. I personally take ownership for my territory and treat it as if it were my own money and business. Because essentially it is. I reap what I sow or am able to enjoy the fruit of my labors.
See, Picc gets it...sales is more than just kissing arse then going home, turning off your celly and laptop to play with the dog.....you have live it, otherwise your customers wont respect you and they will look at you as a joke.
Salespeople that just go through the motions are no different that a used car salesman on a car lot.....those people cannot be trusted and sales is about earning trust

They don't. And I know if I brought that up, he would offer to do so.. so I am not even giving that as an option.
Bottom line is while this is a pay increase, this is still laughable pay to probably most of y'all
We all start somewhere, but as long as I'm making this miniscule an amount of money, I will not sacrifice the two days a week with my SO or something to sit on e-mail and calls all day.
My boss is actually "semi-retired", so his wife is trying to get him away from here to spend more time with her. But he just loves work so much that he will send out his "next greatest idea" from the hotel on his vacation with his wife or something.
I have ~30 e-mails from him alone each morning when I get in.

sales guys spend so much time with customers that they very rarely spend any time with their own friends or family.
It sounds great to say you are hunting, fishing, entertaining, etc every weekend/weekday but I can tell you that shite gets old....it gets old faster when you realize most customers are dicks but you still have to hang out with them
this is why I got out of sales 8 years ago.....it wasnt fun anymore.
Now I entertain my customers because I enjoy it and I have the luxury to cherry pick who I do business with. I'm not forcing myself to spend a weekend with people I dont really like.

The age old struggle. Quota on your mind all year. Company only meets about money. Product never looked at in regards to the actual service and good it provides...only how much we can make on it...who we can sell it to whether it's a viable solution or not. It can make you fricking miserable.

My husband doesn't work in sales either...but no way he could get away with not having his work email attached to his phone. Too many things that may need to be addressed after he has gone home for the day.

thats right, your're position is more important that sales.....so it's even more important that you have your work email connected to your phone..
why wouldnt you want your emails connected to your phone? Who wants to be chained to a desk all day answering emails...especially if you're in sales....

So is posting on Tigerdroppings a lot. Don't you want your own business instead of working for the man your whole life? Better get to it.

First of all, it is "your"
And secondly, no it isn't. At all.
I actually did set it up where it goes to my phone, but I don't even open it up. Or at least I haven't so far.
I make less than people who wait tables. Sorry, but until my position somewhere is important enough to warrant working from home, I will continue to live my personal life when I am not at work.. short of trips/events I pre-scheduled and projects that I myself have planned to take home with me.
I cannot and will not be called on, for example, this Saturday when I am attending a beer festival and trying to talk about work when I'm drinking/busy

dont you travel for your job? Shouldnt you be accessible during working hours when you are traveling on the company dime?
Posted on 3/16/15 at 12:13 pm to tgrbaitn08
You are just trolling now. Nowhere did I say that I ignore work calls/e-mails when I am working. Traveling for work = working. Does it not?
I do not open up work e-mail when I am at home after work... cooking, bathing, etc.
Nor when I am spending the only 2 days per week I get to see my SO.
If it is extremely important, I know I will get more than 1 phone call. No need to open my e-mail.

That's basically how I operate too, if I want to join in on the "fun" I will...if I have something better to do then I do that instead.
