I only recently crossed over from design consulting to construction, so the business end is relatively new to me.

Definitely gives me a wider perspective on whats going on

And that 5% bid bond would be for 5% of the the bid amount that the contractor submitted. Not what it cost someone else to build it.

Don’t know how to link but articles about the WWII hotel were in newspapers recently. As each floor was poured, each sagged creating a need for more support throughout. Not staying there. Google it
Wow. Yep, scratch that one off the list.

Designers tend to use Ctrl C Ctrl V on the specs. That’s why they suck.

This is interesting... dude says the collapse started at the non-Canal side of the structure...

quote:

"The one thing I find hard to understand is the collapse started at the rear of the building (by Rampart and Iberville streets) but it wound up, you had collapsed slabs all the way on the front end of the build which is 300 feet away (on Canal Street)," he said. "So I don’t know how that progression worked like that. I guess that’s part of what the investigation is going to reveal.”

Good ole Walter. Dude practiced without a license for years and is known for his cheap designs.

shite, if you're lucky. I worked for a firm where they had highlighted portions that they would allow us to edit. The rest remained. This was a purchased spec. The Contractors would call me and ask "what conduit am I supposed to use, there are (5) choices." I had a hard time giving them the answer. I hated working there.

Note 12 talks about TS reinforcement in slabs. But still not very clear

Overall those notes are horrible, but they are very vague essentially saying, follow all codes. Gonna leave the engineer some wiggle room so long as his calcs are good.

I get drawings with notes like this all of the time to review and the firm's hate when I make them add all kids of language and charts but it's CYA because the contractor (well most anyways) will take short cuts. Got to be conservative to account for that and 99% suck major arse at QC.

Looking at the video it does look like it started in the non-canal side. I'm not sure what that means though.

The article said he had association with it a few years ago, but the project had a different scope then.
