Gtfoh - if I didn’t push my kid into learning chess, playing sports, or brushing his teeth, the kid would be a shell of himself. Careers choices need guidance too

i am not pushing anything. I try to expose them to various things and let them decide

my youngest has talked about vet school or medical school but she is only 15, so that will probably change

I am pushing medical field and engineering pretty hard. Will take awhile for ai to take many jobs in the heavy regulated med field plus population still getting older. I also think engineering will still provide solid returns.

How's the future supposed to work?

Will all the people who have no jobs from AI just get a life wage while other people work as electricians, welders, and engineers?

How is engineering immune to AI? Seems AI will be able to do most of what engineers do.

At point in our societal evolution, there will be a large portion of the population without jobs yeah?

Ironically- my finance bro son just told me “dad, my buddy’s dad just sold his hedge fund to become a gig guitarist”

I have one at Tulane going the finance bro route. The younger says MIT- he wants to study nuclear energy in some way shape or form.

Yes, their mother is really smart.

My oldest is about to be a nurse and my other one is in graphic design. I worry with the graphic design because of AI but so far it hasn't taken over the graphic design industry. Gonna push the 6 year old to engineering or something that needs human touch to it but I have a while before what he does really matters.

So what’s everybody else doing? If all the jobs are ‘gone’ they are just going to wander the streets aimlessly?

That’s the problem. China for example adopted ai quicker and have a 15-20% young adult unemployment rate

Mine are in their early 20s but oldest wanted to do engineering since early high school, he graduated 2 years ago and doing well.

Youngest was the athlete of the bunch and he graduates in May and starts PT school in June. He was always interested in athletic trainer, DC, PT, etc.

Whatever they were interested we just did what we could to show them the pros and cons of each; they shadowed etc.

Twenty years ago I'd have lost my mind if my kids didn't' go to college. Now I see no point to it unless they want to be a doctor or lawyer. The oldest 2 are getting tech degrees. The professional service industry is dying.

Mine (11th) wants to enlist in CG or Air Force. He’s a go getter, has built a wide customer base doing lawns and landscaping type jobs. He’s got a great work ethic, but is adamant about not wanting to go to college.

Like someone else said, 20 years ago I would have said that’s anathema. Now, I don’t think I can say that.

My biggest concern is what he’ll do after he gets out, if he decides to go the full 20 or so years.

I would also think military with all uncertainties in the world is a direction parents prob don’t want their children taking

some form of engineering. Mine has wanted to do aerospace & aeronautical engineering since he was 4 and is still obsessed so that is the way he will go.

he has met with engineers at NASA and SpaceX and they encouraged him to get his bachelors in mechanical, get masters in aeronautical and then after getting hired somewhere, get them to pay for a MBA.

AI will make engineers life way easier and will take much of the design work from the draftsman.

it will make doing the calcs much easier but we already have had programs for that for 25 years

most engineers dont do the actual drawings, thats the designers and draftsman.....much of that will go away but going into the field, scanning it and coming up with the solution to tell AI to design...yea not going away.

Ai is able to calculate optimally better and faster than humans soon (if not now).

well thats one reason I want my son to get a bachelors in mechanical.

AI will never take over reliability engineering in the plants. Because you have to go out and put your hands on it. Will it make the job easier....sure but computers have been doing that for a while.

certain parts of engineering will be affected....will just make much of engineering much more efficient though

aerospace will be similar. will make them much more efficient.

The sad truth is right here. Its coming for all of us eventually. Health care may take a while, but I've already seen massive improvements in just a year and it can do about 30% of my job right now.

no shite dumbass, the computer programs have been able to do for decades now

its like you have zero clue what engineers actually do? oh wait...you dont

i specifically said...engineers have used computer programs for years to do the calculations. 15 years ago when i was doing fire protection engineering I was using full automatic hydraulic calculations that I had to review when done

but the computer did most of the work.....it has been like that for a long arse time

let me know when AI can go climb a structure and identify the issue or it can go put its hands on the pump and tell where the vibration issue is or why its leaking etc.

Sounds like something a tech can do.
