My guess is they’re tired of dealing with the union. Shut it down and run the union off then reopen as a non union plant in a couple, three years. Sucks, but sometimes it’s the only way.
There's always been some serious animosity between union and management at this mill, even before Koch bought G-P. I remember many times when the OSHA safety milestones were reached, management would have BBQ pits set up and managers were serving up steaks to the employees for lunch. Some of the Union hard cases would take their plates and made sure the managers were watching as they threw them untouched into the trash.

I work for a company that supplies the mill.
They seem to have not been able to keep people around over the last 3-4 years. Every time I went there I met with new people. Probably 10 engineers or purchasing guys left in the couple years.
Last year my contacts were engineers right out of college who had no experience and didn't really know what they needed.
They indicated management was running them off

and getting lost in slaughter trying to take some chick to her house from the Wagon Wheel
One cannot truly appreciate a shutdown unless they have had a cold one (or two) after under the Happy Tree after a 12-Hr shift

Bruh, When GP Management picked that mill for its new premium Quilted Northern product, the union voted AGAINST it.
Know why? They'll sell you a line of bullshite but it was 100% B/C all the operators being assigned to it were getting reclassified and were not given seniority status in the new position, as everyone was being re-trained/tested/assigned.
They threatened a layoff and shutdown so a revote narrowly passed.

I have drank a lot of cold ones under the happy tree. Been many years but I would spend a couple of hours at the tree after each dog shift
BTW I worked in roll finishing and converting on D-Shift

Mike it goes back further than that. When I started the old #2 Pulp Machine was still operating where #5 Tissue Machine is now, and it was bad then
